2016 Orpheum High School Musical Theatre Awards Nominees Revealed by BWW News Desk - On Thursday, May 26th at 7:00 PM, students and supporters from 33 participating schools across the Mid-South will gather at The Orpheum Theatre for the 7th Annual High School Musical Theatre Awards, sponsored in part by Memphis Audio and Sedgwick. Modeled after the Tony Awards, the High School Musical Theatre Awards recognize achievements in all areas of high school musical theatre. Award highlights include: Overall Production - Milton High School for Young Frankenstein; Direction - Calhoun High School's Julie Leggett for Oklahoma!; Best Performance by a Leading Actor - Buford High School's Will Davis for his role as Dr. Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde in Jekyll & Hyde; and Best Performance by a Leading Actress - Marietta High School's Shelbea Owens for her role as Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray. Additionally, recipients of five scholarships and one grant were announced. Tony Award-winner and Marietta-native Shuler Hensley joined GPB Sports Anchor Jackie Brittan to announce the nominations. 28 public and private schools from throughout the state were nominated in 17 categories. The awards, which showcase the next generation of Georgia's musical theatre talent, will be presented at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on April 21.
