Call it classical crossover, popera, or operatic pop, this style of music became the rage when Enrico Caruso started recording Italian popular songs. The tradition is still going strong today with the success of Andrea Bocelli, Il Divo, and Jackie Evancho. Now the Tampa Bay area has its own soon-to-be-famous group.-to

Asolo Rep to Participate in Sarasota's 2014 Giving Challenge

Asolo Repertory Theatre will participate in Sarasota's 2014 Giving Challenge, presented by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County in partnership with The Patterson Foundation, with support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Manatee Community Foundation, William G. and Marie Selby Foundation, and the Charlotte Community Foundation. The 2013 challenge raised more than $2.78 million for local charitable organizations.

The Mainstage kicks off with the foot-stomping musical Pump Boys and Dinettes, the humorous and inspirational drama Becoming Dr. Ruth, and the thought-provoking Taking Shakespeare. The Summer Cabaret Season will consist of At The Hop, by America's Premiere Doo-Wop group, The Alley Cats, Clearly Invisible: Magic Up Close with Carl Seiger, and Somewhere Over the Rose, The Songs and Stories of Judy Garland and Bette Midler.

Asolo Rep to Present MEN WHO COOK, 5/4

Savor scrumptious cuisine prepared by 26 of Sarasota and Bradenton's most well-respected gentlemen! Asolo Rep's fourth annual Men Who Cook, sponsored by Mattison's, ABC 7 and Style magazine, will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2014 at 6pm at Mattison's Bayside at the Van Wezel. Guests will have the opportunity to try all of the chefs' signature dishes - ranging from Moussaka to 'Slap Ya Mama' BBQ Ribs. This fun, casual event, chaired by Beverly Bartner, Judi Gallagher, Molly Schechter and Margaret Wise, will benefit Asolo Rep's 2013-14 season. The event will also feature a cocktail hour, old-fashioned cake auction, a table decor competition, surprise contests, a dessert and coffee bar and the much-anticipated 'Parade of Chefs.'

The plays are here! Florida Studio Theatre's 2014 Young Playwrights Festival has begun. Plays from over 3,000 playwrights were received from all over Florida and across the globe. FST is proud to announce that the winning plays of the Under Six and Seven Up programs have been selected. The winning playwrights will be honored on Saturday, May 10th at the Young Playwrights Festival awards ceremony.

Have you heard about our Black Coffee Staged Reading Series? Once a month on a Saturday, we present new works by local playwrights in a staged reading format featuring local actors. If you haven't been out to see this yet, you really should come! This morning, we did something a little different and fun, and presented Witty Fools & Foolish Wit to honor the 450th birthday of William Shakespeare and also in recognition of April Fool's Day. The reading consisted of select scenes featuring some of Shakespeare's most popular fools. Past readings have featured a new play by local playwright Ray Zacek about notorious Tampa gangster Charlie Wall, a musical about Zombies, a cabaret about French singer Jacques Dutronc, 8 short comedies about death, a drama about the D-Day Invasion in World War Two and more.

Florida Studio Theatre announces its annual Richard and Betty Burdick New Play Reading Series, which will present three new plays by contemporary American playwrights. The series will take place in the Keating Theatre on Monday, April 28 at 7:00pm, Monday, May 5 at 7:00pm, and Saturday, May 10 at 2:00pm, and is part of FST's Sarasota Festival of New Plays. Tickets for the series are 3 plays for $25, or individual play readings for $10. Additionally, FRIENDS of FST can purchase a subscription for all 3 plays for $15. Florida Studio Theatre Receives $30,000 Grant for FOR THE AGES Project

Florida Studio Theatre is delighted to announce that Gulf Coast Community Foundation has approved a $30,000 grant for the development and production of 'FOR THE AGES: A Cultural Gerontology Project,' a new initiative that will create a premiere docudrama comprised of interviews with audience members and experts on the issues of aging.
