The seven time Tony winning musical, The Wiz, presents the story of The Wizard of Oz with a soulful twist. It tells the story of family, friendship, and the power of home. It features songs made famous by the 1978 movie, such as No Bad News, Ease on Down the Road, and Brand New Day. The original 1975 Broadway musical won seven Tony awards including Best Musical. New Tampa Players' production features a predominantly African-American cast led by Carmi Harris (Dorothy), Tron Montgomery (Scarecrow), Thomas Williams (Tinman), and Michael Jo'Mae (Lion).

Produced as a part of the New Tampa Players' 2017-2018 season, The Wiz will be appreciated by all ages. The running time is approximately 2 hours with a 15 minute intermission. This production is funded in part by a grant from the Arts Council of Hillsborough County.

About the Artists:

The New Tampa Players' production of The Wiz features a 52 person diverse cast led by Carmi Harris (Dorothy), Tron Montgomery (Scarecrow), Thomas Williams (Tinman), and Michael Jo'Mae (Lion).

The artistic staff includes David J. Valdez (director), G. Frank Meekins (Artistic Director/music director), Gene Kish (set designer), James Cass (set dressing), Todd Wiener (lighting), and Shelley Giles (costuming).

Partnerships:

University Area CDC: New Tampa Players partners with University Area CDC to provide arts educational opportunities for the residents of the University Area. NTP teaches theatre workshops on acting, singing, choreography, and technical skills to the children in the Prodigy program. NTP also gives backstage tours to the children in the Prodigy program.

Metropolitan Ministries: New Tampa Players and Metropolitan Ministries have partnered to help provide school supplies for the children of Metropolitan Ministries. Bring a school supply to The Wiz and get $1 off admission.

State of the Art Interpreting: New Tampa Players has partnered with State of the Art Interpreting to provide sign language interpretation for our Saturday, August 5th 2:00 PM performance.

Heart Gallery of Tampa Bay: New Tampa Players partners with the Heart Gallery of Tampa Bay to have the Gallery on display at each of our performances.

About the New Tampa Players:

The New Tampa Players is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to cultivating a growing community of arts awareness and providing educational opportunities for all ages throughout the Tampa Bay community. Through their quality theatrical performances, the New Tampa Players are an integral part of the University Area Community Development Center's efforts to improve the economic, education and social levels of the community, impacting over 3,000 students annually.

New Tampa Players 2017-2018 Season:

Following The Wiz, New Tampa Players will continue its 2017-2018 season with Quilt: A Musical Celebration on October 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th. Quilt: A Musical Celebration is a musical about the AIDS Memorial Quilt and the friends and family of the people remembered in its panels. On October 20th-October 29th, New Tampa Players will produce Addams Family: The Musical. Auditions are August 14th and 15th.
