After Winterreise by Jonas Kaufmann and Schwanengesang by Michael Volle, it is Bo Skovhus’ turn to continue the master recitalists’ series dedicated to the great composer of lieder Franz Schubert. The programme is indeed exceptional: Schubert’s famous song cycle, Die Schöne Müllerin (The Fair Maid of the Mill). Faithful patrons of the Grand Théâtre will certainly remember the Danish baritone’s recital here in 2005, or his performances of Amfortas (Parsifal) and Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte). A truly protean artist, Bo Skovhus is blessed with the sincerity and spontaneity that characterise the greatest performers, whether in concert or on stage. Before he tackles the roles of Beckmesser (Die Meistersinger von Nüremberg) and the extraordinarily moving title role of Reimann’s Lear at the Paris Opera, Bo Skovhus takes us to the banks of the mill-stream to tell us the story of the miller’s apprentice, spurned by the girl he is hopelessly in love with and driven to drown himself in despair.
