Our music degree program in Indiana, offers Bethel students many opportunities. Students come from the region (including Indiana, Illinois and Michigan) and from around the country. Instrumentalists can play in the wind ensemble, jazz combo or jazz combo, chamber orchestra or chamber ensemble, or percussion ensemble. Choral students can participate in concert choir, opera workshop or Voices of Triumph, an a cappella group (audition required).
Students are immersed in music through group rehearsals and private lessons with our full-time and adjunct faculty members, who are skilled and trained musicians (many performers in the South Bend/Mishawaka area). Bethel’s music program welcomes the non-degreed student-musicians as well – just another part of receiving a well-rounded liberal arts degree.

During the pandemic, musical theatre lovers were hit with withdrawal. Apple TV took us out of our funk when Schmigadoon hit the air in July of 2021. The series took an original story line and based it around a specific genre of musical theatre. The result had us laughing and singing along for two seasons. The first season was more of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic variety of musical while season two had more of a Chicago/Pippin vibe. For whatever reason, the third season was written but Apple TV elected not to go into production with it.

As we all know, the 23/24 Broadway theatre season has been one of the busiest in a very long time with many new plays and musicals opening within a short period. One of those shows was The Notebook. It features a score by pop writer Ingrid Michaelson and a book by Bekah Brunsetter. The show had a pre-Broadway tryout in Chicago where it was met with unanimous rave reviews.
