Terrance Henderson, well-loved dancer/choreographer/actor/director/artist, premieres his new and very personal creation The Black Man. . .Complex at Trustus Theatre in Columbia, South Carolina Wednesday, August 20, 2014 and Friday, August 22, 2014. Both performances are at 8:00 PM. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at www.trustus.org. Premieres packages may be purchased for $50, and include a ticket to all three Premieres events. The Black Man...Complex is one of three projects that comprise the Premieres Festival, a new works festival presented by Trustus Theatre and Jasper Magazine, and sponsored by Donna Guess.

With an ensemble of six performers, Henderson explores the relationships between ethnicity, sexuality and society in this full-length work, which incorporates movement, sound and images, all interwoven with Henderson's original text and choreography. A search for identity, an emotional journey towards a sacred place, a challenge, a plea, The Black Man. . .Complex utilizes a tapestry of artistic elements to give audience members a sense of one artist's expression of the complexity of finding one's rightful place in the world.

Henderson's eclectic influences can be noted in the wide variety of music he's chosen for The Black Man. . .Complex. The works of recording artists as diverse as Nina Simone, Radiohead, John Legend, T-Pain, James Blake and Funkadelic are included in the evening's soundscape.

Henderson presented an excerpt of this work under his new personal brand TO DANCE Inc. (T.O. Henderson Dance, Incorporated) at the prestigious Rogue Festival in Fresno, California in March of 2012 as special guest artists with Fresno Dance Collective and again in March of 2013 in a full evening of Henderson's work titled "Hole in My Bucket: A Perspective."

An International award-winning choreographer, Terrance Henderson has been the creative force behind Columbia's own Vibrations Dance Company serving as Artistic Director and Principal Choreographer for more than 10 years. Terrance also develops independent dance/theater projects under his personal brand T.O. Henderson Dance Incorporated (TO DANCE, Inc.) Terrance was the 2009 South Carolina Arts Commission Artistic Fellow in Dance Performance and later that same year received the BRONZE LEO AWARD for Outstanding Jazz Choreography at the Jazz Dance World Congress in Chicago, a first for a choreographer from South Carolina. A company member at Trustus Theater, Terrance has choreographed and directed multiple professional productions and has performed on the mainstage in such shows as Next to Normal, Passing Strange, Smokey Joe's Cafe, Hair, and Rent. Terrance is also on the dance faculty at both Columbia Ballet School and Southeastern School of Ballet and has been the long-term artist in residence in the public schools at Logan Elementary, teaching dance and drama for the past 15 years.

Due to an open exploration of adult themes, The Black Man. . .Complex is intended for mature audiences.
