In the last couple of years, a renewed interest in original theatre occurred.  A historically-based show debuted in New York off-Broadway and was an immediate hit.  6 months later the show graduated to a run on Broadway and was nominated for 16 Tony Awards, winning 11 - including Best Musical - along with winning awards in music and literature.  That musical then made a Chicago residency debut last year along with launching a national tour.  That show was called Hamilton.  Now that energy and passion for this kind of theatre is being brought to Crown Point Community Theatre with their new one-off show titled Hysterical Figures - an event where a large group of artists write, rehearse and perform a series of original historically-based plays in one day - on Saturday June 3rd @ 7:30 PM .

Aaron Nichols Named Executive Director of South Bend Civic Theatre

The Board of Directors of the South Bend Civic Theatre (SBCT) has named Aaron Nichols the executive director of SBCT. The executive director is the chief executive officer of the Theatre with oversight responsibility for programming, operations, and staff leadership. Nichols assumes leadership of the Theatre from Rebecca Bonham, who had served as interim executive director since August, 2016.

The DeBartolo Performing Arts Center remains the sole Indiana venue north of Indianapolis scheduled to screen films as part of The Seventh Art Stand, a nation-wide series of films presented by movie theaters and community centers across the U.S. as an act of cinematic solidarity against Islamophobia. The center's Browning Cinema weekend showcase of films, May 5-7, was curated from titles representing the seven countries affected by the travel bans: Syria, Iraq, Somalia, Yemen, Libya, Iran, and Sudan.

This original adaptation is written by Crystal Ryan, the artistic director of the Michiana PlayMakers, and follows the turbulent life of Mary Wollstonecraft, an infamous feminist from the 18th century.

Under the direction of James Geisel, The Acting Ensemble opened their newest show, Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, this past Friday. The play is the first part of Tony Kushner's winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, with the second part coming later in the season as a staged reading. The play is a highly recognized and award winning piece of theatre that looks at the AIDS epidemic in the 1980's, through the experiences of various characters. The Acting Ensemble's approach is to take the play and strip it of all the fancy production elements that usually accompanies the play, and leave Kushner's words as the most dramatic element.
