Review: JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT Twirls with Charm

The South Bend Civic Theatre has just kicked off their 2017 season with the musical hit, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, directed by Jim Geisel. The story follows Joseph, a young man sold into slavery by his jealous brothers. The source of their jealousy is a beautiful coat made of many colors, gifted to Joseph by their father. Joseph also tells his brothers about a dream he had, in which he is destined to rule over them, prompting their betrayal. While the subject matter might sound heavy, the musical itself, with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is actually fast paced, light, and sometimes comical.

The main thing that can be said for SBCT's version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is that it's charming. There was a sense of casualness and familiarity, like friends getting together to put on a show, rather than austere professionals. This is largely in part because the cast seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely. What I saw on stage was a group of actors that obviously loved the musical and were happy to be there. The chemistry, energy, and camaraderie that created those sentiments mainly came from the cast of Josephs 11 brothers. Each brother acted their part fervently, and seemed truly committed to each of their storylines, no matter how small. Seeing them play their parts so passionately added to the fun of the show. When they performed as a group, it was a little messy and muddy, but it absolutely added to the relaxed intimacy that made them so delightful.

Mark Kosten played the titular character, Joseph and wowed as a singer, dancer, and actor. Kosten nailed his performance as Joseph, as he was flawlessly precise in all aspects of his performance. Whether it was hitting his singing notes, conveying the complex story of Joseph, or dancing his way through scenes, Kosten performed impeccably. With such a fantastical musical, it's great to see that Kosten had the talent to keep up, and was not be swallowed by its grandeur.

To add to the heartwarming feel and impressive performances of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, there are also cute little jests and personal add-on's that really make it worth seeing. Between a trio of women wearing everything from beards to poodle skirts, and a character portrayed in the image of our new President, no detail is spared in making the musical a humorous and lively experience.

You'll want to see this production if you are looking for a fun night of quick-paced theatrical entertainment. The musical is bright, bold, and family friendly. There is something for everyone to enjoy, whether it is good acting, quirky dance numbers, or hilarious quips. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat runs until February 12th at the South Bend Civic Theatre.
