What did our critic think of THE SHOW THAT GOES WRONG at Chagrin Valley Little Theatre? In 1923 there was THE TORCHBEARERS.  In 1982 the stage was filled with hysterical disasters during NOISES OFF.  Now there is THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG, the zany Laurence Olivier Award winner.

THE VIEW UPSTAIRS, a musical by Max Vernon, whose musical KPOP won Best Musical honors in off-Broadway's Lortel Awards and was also nominated for seven Drama Desk awards, is inspired by real life events of the 1973 arson attack at the UpStairs Lounge, a vibrant gay bar in New Orleans. Now accepted as a targeted anti-gay attack, the arson resulted in the deaths of 32 people and was, until the 2016 Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooting, the deadliest assault on a gay club in U.S. history. The show is inspired by and pays tributes to many of the patrons that frequented the venue.

Tchaikovsky: None But the Lonely Heart is the final production of the 2017-'18 season at The Pershing Square Signature Center (480 West 42nd Street between Dyer and 10th Avenues) The show opened last night, May 31st, to kick off its limited Off-Broadway engagement which runs through June 17th only. Azuka Theatre ends the 2017-2018 season with the world premiere of Mrs. Harrison, by R. Eric Thomas, from May 2 to20, 2018. Mrs.Harrison is the third and final show of the season that celebrated Azuka's commitment to notable Philadelphia playwrights and unique Philadelphia voices. Producing Artistic Director Kevin Glaccum directs this suspenseful dark comedy and drama about two women, one story and their very different memories about their relationship in college. The show runs through May 20, 2018, for a total of 18 performances.  All performances will take place at the Louis Bluver Theatre at The Drake, 302 S. Hicks Street. Tickets for shows this season are Pay What You Decide, whereas audience members see a show first, and pay what they decide after the performance. For reservations, visit azukatheatre.org. The Comrades are pleased to present the second show of their 2017/18 season, the Chicago premiere of ROW AFTER ROW by Jessica Dickey, which will be directed by Ann Kreitman. The show will play the Apollo Studio Theater (2540 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago) from February 5 through 27, 2018. 

The cast and crew of Bulldozer: The Ballad of Robert Moses celebrated the show's Off-Broadway opening on December 12th, 2017 with an opening night party at Deacon Brodie's in Hell's Kitchen. The Bench stars Robert Galinsky and marks the New York directorial debut of Jay O. Sanders. It began its limited run at the Cherry Lane Theatre (38 Commerce Street) on October 15 and will initially run Sunday evening at 7pm through December 17, 2017. The Peccadillo Theater Company, the OBIE, Lucille Lortel and Drama Desk Award-winning company dedicated to the rediscovery of classic American theater, presents a revival of The Show-Off by Pulitzer Prize-winning dramatist George Kelly, starring Lucille Lortel Award-winner Annette O'Toole (Southern Comfort, Man from Nebraska, 'Smallville,' 'Halt and Catch Fire'). Seeing You, the new immersive experience from impresario Randy Weiner (Sleep No More, Queen of the Night) and avante garde choreographer Ryan Heffington (Sia's 'Chandelier' music video), opens today, June 21, 2017, Off-Broadway at a former meat market under The High Line at 450 West 14th Street in the Meatpacking District of New York City. The King was in the in the house, last night. The cast of the new Off-Broadway musical Attack of the Elvis Impersonators, the zany new musical that will leave you howling for more, with book, music and lyrics by Lory Lazarus, at The Lion Theatre at Theatre Row (410 West 42nd Street, between 9th & 10th Avenues) welcomed Elvis Impersonators to the show, now in performance through September 24, 2017. ELEVATOR is currently enjoying a sold-out run at the Coast Playhouse in West Hollywood, and due to ticket demand, has been extended again through July 30, 2017. I originally reviewed the show in April 2017 and was fascinated by the level of audience emotional attachment to the characters, so I arranged an interview with writer/director Michael Leoni and one of the featured actors in show, Erica Katzin, who plays The Temp, hoping some of their comments will encourage you to order your tickets NOW before the Los Angeles run ends.

Punchdrunk International and co-producers SMG Live have announced that their production of Sleep No More in Shanghai will now run until 12 August 2017. The company marked a major milestone recently with their 100th performance on Wednesday 3 May.  A special celebration took place where audience members were treated to a one-off cabaret night after the show. Fresh off of the show's four Tony wins, Hello, Dolly! just welcomed two-time Tony Award®-winner and one of Broadway's most treasured stars, Donna Murphy, stepping into the role of Dolly Gallagher Levi for Tuesday evening performances beginning last night, June 13. (Ms. Murphy will also take over the role during Ms. Midler's vacations.)

Celebrity Chef Lidia Bastianich and Equal Rights Activist Edie Windsor who recently paid a visit to The York Theatre Company production of the Off-Broadway premiere of the new musical Marry Harry, with book by Jennifer Robbins and music and lyrics by Dan Martin and Michael Biello. The composers of Marry Harry have composed a number in the show titled 'Lidia' dedicated to the celebrity chef who was on hand to hear an encore presentation by the cast. Edie Watson and her wife Judith Kasen gathered to cheer on the cast following a recent performance
