Photo Flash: Children's Theatre Company Brings Back Dr. Seuss's HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS
by A.A. Cristi - Nov 8, 2017

Children's Theatre Company (CTC) announces the reprise of audience favorite Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas for the holidays, a production that has delighted since its world premiere at CTC in 1994. The Grinch was Dr. Seuss's first villain, and it is said that he appeared to the author as he looked in the mirror on December 26, 1956; what he saw in his grumpy countenance was the disdain for the commercialization of the holiday, a very Grinchy image, and that was how the Grinch was born. This piece is both a critique of commercialization and a celebration of community, and has become Dr. Seuss's most enduring piece.

BWW Interviews: Robert Creighton: Making It Real
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Aug 5, 2015

'The more real you play it, the better for any piece, even a comedic piece like this one.' Stage and television actor Robert Creighton is talking about his upcoming role debut in Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein, which opens August 6th at the Maine State Music Theatre. Creighton, who is playing the meaty role of Frankenstein's bungling, hunchbacked assistant Igor, says of his approach to the part, 'The script is so good, so honed that I just have to say the words and stay out of their way. I don't have to mug. It is so well-crafted that I simply embrace the stupidity of it all, enjoy that and watch the audience enjoy it, too. When you play it for real, you are not making fun of the humor or commenting on the material, and the situation takes care of itself.'

BWW Reviews: Haunting Season Finale at Mad Horse Theatre
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Jun 2, 2014

South Portland's Mad Horse Theatre Company ended its season with a poignant and ambitious production of the Tony-award-winning musical, Grey Gardens. A musical is a bit of a departure for the small theatre company and its tiny black box space, but they acquitted themselves with both substance and aplomb. Premiered in New York in 2006 with music by Scott Frankel, lyrics by Michael Korie, and book by Douglas Wright, the play tells the heartbreaking story of Jacqueline Kennedy's reclusive aunt and cousin, whose eccentric lives descend into disarray and squalor. With a script that is part Long Day's Journey into Night and a score that is part Stephen Sondheim, Grey Gardens is laden with pathos and a bittersweet humor. The lyrics are mordant; the music through composed as an extension of the dialogue, it is a theatre piece which calls for sensitive singing-actors and a director who can plumb its depths. Fortunately, the Mad Horse Theatre has both!

Photo Flash: The Absurdist Rock Comedy BIRDSONGS
by Gabrielle Sierra - Mar 9, 2009

Striding Lion InterArts Workshop presents their eighth full-length production, the world premiere of 'Birdsongs,' a down-the-rabbit-hole look at one man's search for a particularly fascinating girl in a digital world. Based on and featuring the music of Striding Lion's original concept album of the same name, 'Birdsongs' tells the story of the Birdwatcher, who finds himself enraptured with a girl he discovers online, who leads him on a journey through the nooks and crannies of an internet-based world. This absurdist rock comedy explores a world of narcissism and voyeurism, of self-branding and self-marketing, where people come and go quickly, and are not always who they seem to be. The piece runs about 80 minutes without intermission.
