The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia (UBC) presents celebrated Canadian author Steven Galloway (The Cellist of Sarajevo) with master magician David Gifford on February 26, 2015 at 7:30pm, as part of the Beyond Words series at the Telus Studio Theatre. A new twist on the popular literary series' mandate to 'ignite conversation' through words and performance, this original collaboration weaves readings from Galloway's latest acclaimed novel The Confabulist - a beautiful, suspense-filled tale about the life and sudden death of turn-of-the-century magician and stunt performer Harry Houdini - with astounding live illusions presented by Gifford.

HOUDINI Musical Still Coming to Broadway? Producers Seek New Creative Team

As BroadwayWorld previously reported, in late 2013, it was announced that Hugh Jackman had departed the upcoming stage musical based on America's greatest showman, Houdini. The project was originaly slated to come to Broadway in the 2013-14 theatre season, but it was later revealed that it would not arrive until 2015-16. According to the New York Times, the show still might have a life on stage, as producers are 'trying to attract a new creative team and star to resuscitate the show.'

Since its creation in 1997, Ragtime has remained one of my favorite musicals for two reasons. Its simply gorgeous almost opera-like musical score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens moves me to the bone, and it has more meaningful historical content about America at the turn of the 20th century than just about any other show. Now by means of 3D Theatricals' new, freshly staged production, onstage in Fullerton through October 26, Ragtime continues its deeply moving effect on audiences.

Two Chicago Actors Killed in Separate Accidents

The Chicago theatre community suffered a shocking loss as two well-known local actors suddenly passed away this weekend. According to the Chicago Tribune, Molly Glynn, age 46, was killed by a falling tree as she was riding her bike on September 5. Bernie Yvon, age 50, died in a car crash on his way to rehearsal on Saturday morning for Theatre at the Center's production of Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown in Munster, Indiana.
