A stellar cast brightens a Romberg favorite. Operetta, as a genre, arose in the 1850's and swelled into a widely beloved form of entertainment. In America its chief luminaries were Sigmund Romberg, Victor Herbert, and Rudolf Friml. From the 1920's to the '40's the modern musical gradually drove operettas from the stage (except for the happily undying works of Gilbert & Sullivan). And I miss them! So I greatly approve of Winter Opera's offering us this old piece.

In a whimsical world of beetles, scorpions, and bugs of all sorts, a beetle falls in love with an injured butterfly. The Butterfly's Evil Spell is a story about unrequited love set on the side of the road in South Texas originally written by Spanish playwright, Federico García Lorca in 1920 and newly translated and adapted by Dante Flores.

The Cleveland Orchestra has announced its full lineup of classical music concerts for its 2023 Blossom Music Festival. The festival, located at Blossom Music Center in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, runs from July 1 to September 9, and features 24 concerts.

Musical Theatre Factory, New York's developmental hub for changemaking new musicals, will present selections from Shoot for the Moon, a new musical featuring book, music, and lyrics by David Gomez and John-Michael Lyles, music direction by Remy Kurs, and directed by raja feather kelly, at Harlem's Silvana Cafe on October 3.

Playhouse has raised over $25,000 to donate to Jose Andres’ World Central Kitchen. Audience favorite, Silent Film Night with the Anchorage Symphony, is back with The Mark of Zorro! This genre-defining swashbuckling adventure stars silent screen legend Douglas Fairbanks as the legendary Zorro and Marguerite De La Motte as the lovely and spirited Lolita.

Battery Dance celebrates the 40th Anniversary of its free summer festival from August 12-20, 2021, in partnership with Battery Park City Authority. The 40th Annual Battery Dance Festival features 16 international dance films from August 12-14 at 7pm ET via YouTube. 40 in-person and livestreamed performances will be staged at Robert F. Wagner, Jr. Park, New York City, from August 15-20 at 7pm ET. In total, 32 premieres by 53 dance companies are offered to international audiences, promoting Battery Dance’s mission of connecting the world through dance.

The series features leading artists including pianists Perez, Ella O’Neill and Simon Lepper, singers Fleur Barron, Nicky Spence, Anush Hovhannisyan and Nardus Williams, and three of the 2021 OHP Young Artists, Charlotte Badham, Charlotte Bowden and Isabelle Peters. The series was curated by Julien Van Mellaerts in collaboration with Dylan Perez, for Opera Holland Park.

'Ybor City,' an original musical with book by Anita Gonzalez and music and lyrics by Dan Furman, is a story of romance and labor organizing in 1918 Tampa, where the Afro-Cuban workforce joined with Italian and Spanish immigrants to unionize the new American cigar industry. The tuner will be presented as a work-in-progress February 5 to 26 by Brooklyn Tavern Theater, which is is pioneering a new theatrical genre: no-frills, immersive musicals presented as Equity showcases in hospitable taprooms. Performances will be Feb. 5, 12, 18, 19 and 26 at Rustik Tavern, 471 Dekalb Ave., Bed-Stuy and February 10 and 25 at The Players, 16 Gramercy Park South, Manhattan. Vernice Miller directs a cast of eleven. Co-producer is Art Boundaries Unlimited, Inc.

The Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture presents Havana Jam honoring the 500th Anniversary of the Founding of Havana with bassist / violinist / composer Yunior Terry leading his septet Son de Altura featuring vocalist David Oquendo and special guests - Cuban song stylist Gema, Charanga flutist Eddy Zervigón, of Orquesta Broadway, and classical pianist Adonis González, on Friday, November 15, 7:30 PM in the Repertory Theater at Hostos Community College, 450 Grand Concourse at 149th Street in the Bronx.

The Ford Theatres today announced the 2019 season of events at the John Anson Ford Theatres. The 2019 season will open on Saturday, April 27 with The Spring Quartet: Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano, Esperanza Spalding and Leo Genovese, who The Arts Desk described as "an expansive, freewheeling rampage, ideas flying out like sparks from a roaring fire," and will conclude on October 19 and 20 with a Dia de los Muertos Concert and Community Celebration.
