BWW Review: Kafka's Dark, Dystopian Classic THE TRIAL Dazzles at Synetic Theater
by Jeffrey Walker - Jan 24, 2018

Synetic's latest work is taken from Kafka's novel THE TRIAL with elements borrowed from his other works, presented in the kinetic and bold theatrical style the 22-year old company has earned their renown. A perfect fusion of movement, stagecraft, text and performance, Synetic's THE TRIAL leaves a lasting impression long after the performance. I confess in my six years of covering theatre in the DC area, THE TRIAL is my first Synetic production. But it certainly will not be the last. (more...)

BWW Review: SOMETHING ROTTEN! at Bass Performance Hall
by Christina Hoth - Jan 19, 2018

It's Hard to be the Bard. In fact, it is extremely hard to write anything original today. Hollywood keeps revamping the classics, Television keeps remaking the greats, and Broadway keeps reviving the hits. So when Something Rotten! arrived on Broadway in 2015, bypassing its initial proposed preview in Seattle, the unprecedented play had a bit of buzz backing its debut. Finally, an original musical comedy was taking an angle that no other had attempted--the origin of the musical! (more...)

BWW Review: SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE Sizzles at SpeakEasy Stage Company
by Nancy Grossman - Jan 16, 2018

SpeakEasy Stage Company's New England premiere production of SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE is a meaty, fast-paced comic romp with lots of sizzle to go with that steak. Jennifer Ellis and new leading man in town, George Olesky, are a match made in heaven, surrounded by a talented ensemble that includes Nancy E. Carroll, Remo Airaldi, Eddie Shields, and Lewis D. Wheeler. Director Scott Edmiston wrangles a cast of 18 into a cohesive bundle of joy (more...)

BWW Review: SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE Stage Adaptation Romances at South Coast Repertory
by Michael Quintos - Feb 1, 2018

Witty, enchanting, and joyously self-referential, the original film version of SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE fantasizes a story involving a young, virile William Shakespeare in his prime, who quells a bout of Writer's Block by secretly romancing an engaged lady named Viola---which apparently becomes the inspiration for the Bard's infamous star-crossed tragedy 'Romeo and Juliet.' The plot of the film remains fairly intact in Lee Hall's mostly delightful if slightly diluted stage adaptation, now continuing performances in a gorgeous-looking new regional production at Orange County's Tony Award-winning theater South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa through February 10, 2018. This spunky love letter to the theater is chockfull of stagecraft-insider amusements and fun-to-find Shakespearean Easter Eggs that both aficionados and casual fans will appreciate. But, shockingly, despite the spectacular production values and the beguiling, gusto-bathed performances of its large ensemble cast, this stage adaptation somehow loses some of the inescapable romanticism that is so much more prevalent in the original film. Faustina Masigat's Debut Album Streaming on PopMatters Today
by TV News Desk - Apr 2, 2018

Faustina Masigat's debut album is one of keen reflection and personal struggles that the Portland songwriter has assembled into relatable and beautiful prose, striking a comfortable balance between abstract introspection and objective observations. Her self-titled album, coming out this Friday on Mama Bird Recording Co. (Haley Heynderickx, Courtney Marie Andrews), is streaming in full at PopMatters who say Masigat 'develops an intuitive, captivating listen throughout.' While speaking to the process of capturing her debut album, Masigat says 'there is a mundanity in heartbreak that I struggled to break out of for years. The recording process was deliberately very bare bones because I wanted that tension to be as palpable as possible. If a person really commits to their own suffering, absolutely everything becomes colored by that action. There are songs that carry that weight more than others, but the whole album was inspired by that period of time. I had had Writer's Block, and it felt like I was moving from situation to situation with no anchor. Every resource I had went into writing and breaking out of that monotony.' (more...)
