The Actors Fund has teamed with SiriusXM Broadway host Seth Rudetsky and his husband, producer James Wesley, to produce a daily mini-online show, entitled Stars in The House, featuring stars of stage and screen singing and performing live (from home!) on social media to promote support for The Fund's services for those most vulnerable to the effects of virus.

The Met's first cancellation due to coronavirus concerns was the revival of Rossini's LA CENERENTOLA, the opera retelling of the Cinderella story, set to star mezzo Tara Erraught in the title role and one of its biggest tenor stars, Javier Camarena as Don Ramiro, her prince. The opera holds a particular place in Camarena's history at the Met: It made him an overnight sensation when he was tapped to replace Juan Diego Florez and blew the roof off--a real-life Cinderella story.

Other Lives are set to release their long-awaited new album For Their Love on ATO Records on April 24, and today the band shares their new single “Hey Hey I.” The track comes via a striking black-and-white video shot in the A-frame house studio in the Oregon mountains where the band recorded For Their Love. “The video is a reflection of the recording process of the album, that took place in the A-frame in the woods,” says frontman Jesse Tabish. “We wanted to portray this process in a natural, organic way, without telling a story but rather showing glimpses of us working together as well as coming together with friends.” 

Rising singer, songwriter and veteran musician Tom Goss has released the passionate and evocative music video for 'Quebec' starring Mean Girls' Daniel Franzese. Check out the first look via Billboard. Filmed on location in Quebec, the single tells the story of Tom revealing to his husband he is in love with another man after learning of his husband's infidelity and opening their marriage. Devastated, the chorus recounts Tom's husband's words before he broke down, word for word: 'We are not us. There is another us to us. We are not special. We are no longer special.' The music video for 'Quebec' marks Goss and Franzese's second collaboration following the music video for 'La Bufadora,' which has been nominated for best 'Indie Music Video' at this year's Queerties.

The Utah Symphony joins in the year-long celebration of Beethoven's 250th birthday with four Masterworks programs led by Music Director Thierry Fischer featuring Beethoven's most iconic symphonies, and a gala performance of the composer's Violin Concerto by piano superstar Joshua Bell commemorating the orchestra's 80th anniversary. Watching Philip Quast perform at Hamer Hall, accompanied by Anne-Maree McDonald, was an absolute treat. Akeelah and the Bee is a family-fun production that highlights an 11-year old African-American girl's journey of surviving the inner-city challenges of the Chicago projects to her acrimonious success as a finalist/winner of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.  The stage adaptation remained true to the movie's original theme about overcoming obstacles (poverty, bullying, inner-city woes such as shooting and drugs, racial and societal stereotypes, etc.), while stressing the importance of the strong community ties and love that undergird Akeelah's rise to success.

Yes, MAME is available for licensing on the Concord Theatricals website, but if I wanted to mount it on Broadway it would be a little more complicated than shelling out cash. Hurdles for non-professional productions are not substantial, but many professional productions require levels of permission. Jerry Herman, who passed away on December 26, 2019, was a man unlikely to give permission for professional productions of his shows unless he thought they would be good.

Next up for L.A. Theatre Works will be Qui Nguyen's VIETGONE, set to be recorded live at the James Bridges Theater on the UCLA campus for four performances beginning January 24, 2020. East West Players' Producing Artistic Director Emeritus Tim Dang will direct this semi-fictional tale of how Qui's parents met in an Arkansas relocation camp. The talented cast includes Will Dao, Desirée Mee Jung, Greg Watanabe, Paul Yen and Jeena Yi. I grabbed the opportunity, after all these years of knowing him, to interview the creative force behind the early development of the East West Players - Tim Dang.

Back in the spotlight with a sublime new rhythm and blues record, James Hunter follows up six critically acclaimed albums with his latest recording, Nick of Time, set for release on Brooklyn's renowned soul label Daptone Records. Nick of Time is a shining testament of how a master songsmith continually draws fresh water from a bottomless well.
