It's been 80 years since Bessie Smith, the celebrated Empress of the Blues, died a lonely death, after an auto accident on a desolate Mississippi road. Contrary to legend, Smith did not bleed to death after being refused admission to a white Southern hospital. That story was related to Down Beat magazine by Columbia Records impresario John Hammond, who later apologized, saying that it was all based on hearsay. But her injuries were severe enough so that when she was taken to the nearest hospital (which happened to be one that accepted blacks), that she was beyond saving, and died at the young age of 43.

Remember when June fell for Johnny, and Loretta was just a coal miner's daughter?  Well, Flat Rock Playhouse sure does, and the first Main Stage show of their 2017 season is reminiscent of just that. 

The Phoenix Theatre and the Indianapolis JCC will present a special partnership performance of An Act of God, by David Javerbaum. This divine comedy travels from the Phoenix Theatre to the JCC for one night only, March 7, 2017 at 7 p.m.

This year the Canton Symphony Orchestra is proud to bring back their favorite Kent-based band, The Speedbumps, for a third collaborative concert.  On February 11, 2017, the CSO and The Speedbumps will travel to the historic Canton Palace Theatre to show off in a truly “locally grown” concert.  They will begin at 8:00PM todaynight, and the audience will be treated to some of the band's past hits, as well as some of their new releases.  This concert is sponsored in part by the W. Henry Hoover Foundation. Rubicon Theatre Company celebrates Black History Month with THE DEVIL'S MUSIC: THE LIFE AND BLUES OF BESSIE SMITH, starring singer and actress Miche Braden of the original Off-Broadway production (named one of the 10 Best Off-Broadway productions of the year by the N.Y. Daily Times). Described by CBC as a, "bawdy, bluesy, boozy rollicking night out at the theatre," the show follows the life, loves and career of blues and jazz singer Bessie Smith, called the "Empress of the Blues."

Dick Brukenfeld's antic new comedy THE BIG BROADCAST ON EAST 53rd opens tonight, February 9th, at The TBG Theatre, 312 West 36th Street, NYC, under Charles Maryan's direction. The Equity production continues through February 25th.

Agatha Christie is widely known as one of the most successful authors across the globe. Her theatrical works, including THE MOUSETRAP, AND THEN THERE WERE NONE, and LOVE FROM A STRANGER have been performed countless times since their publication and continue to be loved by all audiences today. MURDER ON THE NILE as put on by Oyster Mill Playhouse in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, is no exception to Christie's suspenseful repertoire. It is the tale of passengers from many different walks of life thrown into close quarters on a paddle steamer down the Nile River, set adrift towards drama and misfortune.

Playlinda Productions presents the World Premiere of Dick Brukenfeld's antic new comedy THE BIG BROADCAST ON EAST 53rd at The TBG Theatre, 312 West 36th Street, NYC. Charles Maryan will direct. 

Mark St. Germain's solo play about celebrity sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer received it's World Premiere at Barrington Stage Company in June 2012. The production was met with much success and went out to play at TheatreWorks Hartford before moving to New York. In October of 2013, Becoming Dr. Ruth received its Off-Broadway premiere at the Westside Theatre. Actress Debra Jo Rupp, who originated the role Off-Broadway, received both Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award Nominations for her portrayal of Dr. Ruth.

The Public Theater presents the 13th annual UNDER THE RADAR FESTIVAL, running today, January 4, through January 15, 2017.

The performance schedule has been changed for 'Light Up The Night,' a theatrical concert of rediscovered and restored Yiddish theater songs by Ellstein, Goldfaden, Olshanetsky, Rumshinsky, and Secunda, to be presented by National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene (NYTF) January 1 in Edmond J. Safra Hall at Museum of Jewish Heritage, 36 Battery Place, Manhattan.  Originally two shows were planned, at 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM.  The 2:00 PM performance continues as scheduled but the 6:00 PM performance has been canceled.

 To ring in the New Year, on January 1 National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene (NYTF) will present 'Light Up The Night,' a concert of rediscovered and restored pre- and post-WWII music from the theatrical works of the great composers of the Golden Age of Yiddish Theater.  These include Ellstein, Goldfaden, Olshanetsky, Rumshinsky and Secunda.  All are leading songwriters from the era of 'The Golden Bride,' which was presented by Folksbiene Theatre in 2015 and 2016.  The cast will feature performers who were acclaimed in that production, backed by a 16-piece orchestra.  The production is in Yiddish with projected supertitles.  The full concert will be offered twice, at 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM, in Edmond J. Safra Hall at Museum of Jewish Heritage, 36 Battery Place.
