2013 Charlie Parker Jazz Festival Kicks Off in Central Park
by BWW News Desk - Aug 22, 2013

City Parks Foundation announces the 21st edition of the beloved late summer jazz favorite, the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival. In the world of modern music, few figures loom as large or cast as long a shadow as saxophonist Charlie Parker, best known as 'Bird' (short for 'Yardbird') to generations of musicians. He was born in 1920, and almost sixty years since his death in 1955, he is universally celebrated for single-handedly inventing bebop and bringing jazz into the modern era.

Steven Kasher Gallery to Display New Photos by Joel Grey, Begin. 9/12
by Tyler Peterson - Jul 30, 2013

Steven Kasher Gallery is pleased to present The Billboard Papers: Photographs by Joel Grey. With The Billboard Papers, Joel Grey further explores his signature theme: the ephemeral and overlooked evidence of urban development and decay. Focusing on exterior city billboards, covered and re-covered over time and transformed by the elements, these works capture the ever-changing layers of faded iconography that New Yorkers live amongst but rarely notice. The Billboard Papers represents Grey's first large-format exhibit.

BWW Special Report: PIPPIN's Motown Magic Returns to Broadway
by Kevin Winkler - Apr 3, 2013

As an undergraduate theater major in the early 1970s, I heard music everywhere. It seemed to pour out of every office and workspace around the department. (And in the LP era, if you wanted more than the radio, this meant schlepping a twenty pound record player and a dozen or so albums from your home to the campus, sometimes requiring back-and-forth trips from the car. If you go to that much trouble, you want to keep the music playing.) In the hushed costume shop with its quietly industrious all female staff, Broadway ruled, with Stephen Sondheim's recent Company and Follies in heavy rotation. It was 'men only' in the scene shop where I listened to male balladeers like James Taylor and Gordon Lightfoot while unhappily working off assigned crew hours. Jazz classes (my favorites) in the dance department were conducted to the pre-disco sounds of Isaac Hayes and the Temptations. And late night cast parties were never complete without spins of Bette Midler's first two albums.
