On Sunday, February 12, 2017 at 7:30pm, Works & Process at the Guggenheim presents excerpts from Champion by five-time Grammy award-winning musician and playwright Terence Blanchard, who tells the true story of Emile Griffith in his haunting and visually stunning 'opera in jazz.' The work, which blew critics away when it premiered in 2013, explores the life of the closeted gay boxer whose knockout of a homophobic rival in the early 1960s let to unexpected tragedy. Washington National Opera Artistic Director Francesca Zambello will moderate a discussion with Blanchard, Deynce Graves and other members of the cast following performance excerpts.

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum (9/11 Memorial Museum) at the World Trade Center in New York City has acquired for their permanent collection a seminal work by Brooklyn-based artist, Daniel Kohn. His painting installation, Looking South (2003), is a monumental four-panel work originally commissioned by  Fiduciary Trust Company Internationalto serve as a memorial to the firm's 9/11 experience. The painting, which Fiduciary Trust bequeathed to the museum, went on view in early August. The Museum is open daily 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.; for more information, visit: www.911memorial.org.

Trombonist Reggie Watkins to Release Third Album in July

Trombonist Reggie Watkins had the opportunity to meet trombone master Jimmy Knepper just once, shortly before Knepper's death in June 2003. Watkins was performing in his native Wheeling, WV with Maynard Ferguson's Big Bop Nouveau Band, and Knepper, himself a Ferguson alumnus, was in the audience. The older musician complimented Watkins after the concert and shook his hand.
