Celebrating its rich history of quality and innovation in choreography, Smuin Balletcelebrates its 20th Anniversary with a dynamic 2014 XXRAVAGANZA GALA, to be held Saturday, March 1, 2014. Honorary Chairs Elaine and Tony La Russa are joined by Event Co-chairs Patti and Jerry Hume, Athena and John Konstin, and celebrity guest auctioneers, former San Francisco Mayor Willie L. Brown and "Voice of the Giants" Renel Brooks-Moon, to create an exhilarating tribute to Smuin Ballet, featuring highlights from the past 20 years as well as glimpses of this season's brilliant lineup. Senator Mark Leno will open the festivities with a special presentation from the State Senate in honor of Smuin Ballet and its 20 years of creative and artistic excellence. Burning Coal Theatre Company will hold its second "Lobby Lecture" of the 2013/2014 season, "Rise of the Puppets", which will feature Cindy Shook of Blue Moon Puppets speaking on "The Rise of Puppetry as a Popular Art Form", in conjunction with its current production, (Three Man) Tempest by William Shakespeare. The event will take place at 6 pm on Saturday, December 14th, 2013 at Burning Coal Theatre, 224 Polk Street, Raleigh. Dr. Barbara Ann Teers's National Black Theatre (NBT) will open its 45th Season with the New York Premiere of The Last Saint On Sugar Hill, written by Keith Josef Adkins and directed by Seret Scottannounced NBT's Director of Theatre Arts Program, Jonathan McCrory. Preview performances begin tonight, October 29th at NBT, 2031 Fifth Avenue starting at 7:30pm. The opening night is set for Friday, November 1st at 7pm. The production will run through Sunday, November 24th.

The Bay Area's hottest holiday ticket gets a 20th Anniversary Season kick with XXmas: The Christmas Ballet, 2013 Edition, making its sassy return with a perfect gift for audience members of all ages. Smuin Ballet will kick off its 20th Anniversary Season in San Francisco this October with its XXtremesFall Program, featuring a lineup of stunning works that showcase the range and versatility of the lauded Smuin dancers. In XXtremes, Northern California audiences get their first look at Ji?i Kylian's acclaimed Return to a Strange Land, set to four heart-rending pieces for solo piano by Czech composer Leoš Jana?ek. Smuin also brings back by popular demand the enchanting ballet Dear Miss Cline, a buoyant and colorful romp set to the music of Patsy Cline by Choreographer in Residence Amy Seiwert, and Carmina Burana, one of Michael Smuin's most lauded works, set to Carl Orff's 1937 dramatic cantata of the same title. Smuin Ballet ends its season with an invigorating lineup of fresh choreography, presenting the West Coast premiere of the bright ballet Petal by acclaimed choreographer Helen Pickett, set to music by Philip Glass and Thomas Montgomery Newman. In addition, Bay Area audiences will get their first look at Darrell Grand Moultrie's JAZZIN', a sultry ballet set to music by Wynton Marsalis, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, and Andy Razaf. The bill also includes Michael Smuin's romantic and pastoral Chants d'Auvergne. Smuin Ballet's Spring Program will play today, May 10-19 at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, May 22-26 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, May 31-June 1 at Walnut Creek's Lesher Center for the Arts, and June 7-8 at Carmel's Sunset Center.
