This year the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts began with the question, 'If you had a time machine, where would you go?' In answer to that, the Painted Bride is taking audiences back to December 5, 1833 and right into the heart of the founding of the Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society. This creation, If She Stood, will run for six performances - tonight, April 26, 2013 at 8pm, Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 8pm, and Sunday, April 28, 2013 at 3pm, followed by Today, May 3, 2013 at 8pm, Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 8pm and Sunday May 5, 2013 at 3pm, at the Painted Bride Art Center during the 2013 Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts.

Smuin Ballet ends its season with an invigorating lineup of fresh choreography, presenting the West Coast premiere of the bright ballet Petal by acclaimed choreographer Helen Pickett, set to music by Philip Glass and Thomas Montgomery Newman. In addition, Bay Area audiences will get their first look at Darrell Grand Moultrie's JAZZIN', a sultry ballet set to music by Wynton Marsalis, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, and Andy Razaf. The bill also includes Michael Smuin's romantic and pastoral Chants d'Auvergne. Smuin Ballet's Spring Program will play May 10-19 at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, May 22-26 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, May 31-June 1 at Walnut Creek's Lesher Center for the Arts, and June 7-8 at Carmel's Sunset Center.

Le French Book is launching a 99-cent e-book collection with short stories from seven of France's best writers-Tatiana de Rosnay, Didier Van Cauwelaert, Yann Queffelec, Daniel Picouly, Christine Orban, Irene Frain, and Harold Cobert. These top authors got together to play a collaborative writing game called 'cadavres exquis' ("delicious corpses"), in which one started a story and passed it on until all the authors had contributed. The resulting seven-author stories are sometimes strange, always very clever, and a real study in writing skill.

The San Francisco Center for the Book presents "Druckworks," a comprehensive survey of artworks by artist and scholar Johanna Drucker, featuring more than 60 books as well as graphic art and visual projects produced over the last 40 years. In addition to scholarly work, Drucker has produced more than two dozen artist books, many produced letterpress and using experimental typography. From deeply personal narratives, to humorous reflections and theoretically engaged poetics, Drucker's works have helped shape the field of artists' books, visual poetics, and digital aesthetics in dialogue with the arts and critical issues.

The Gish Prize Trust today announced that playwright, actress, author and educator Anna Deavere Smith has been selected to receive the 19th annual Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, given annually as a legacy from the legendary film and stage actresses. Established in 1994, it is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious awards in the arts and is also one of the largest, currently bearing a cash value of approximately $300,000. Since its founding in 1992, SITI Company has redefined contemporary theater in the United States through an innovative approach to actor training as well as collaboration and cultural exchange. Company members have taught at Harvard, Columbia, NYU, Juilliard, Bard, Emerson, Royal Shakespeare Company and UCLA, to name a few. As it begins its 20th anniversary season, SITI is proud to announce the establishment of the SITI Conservatory Program, a one-year program that will train the next generation of theater makers.
