California Shakespeare Theater's 25th anniversary season at the Bruns Amphitheater continues with August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning story of the American Dream deferred, Fences, directed by Raelle Myrick-Hodges in her Cal Shakes debut. Fences, which plays from July 6 through July 31, marks the first time Cal Shakes has presented August Wilson's work on its stage. It seems unimaginable that a single work of art can both hysterically mock and lovingly embrace some of our fondest childhood memories. However, as the 'AVENUE Q Theme Song' transitions into the first official song of the musical (one of modern musical theatre's most effective opening numbers) it becomes clear that this show is unlike anything that came before it, and that traditional musical theatre conventions, and easily offended sensibilities, should be thrown out the window.

Nathan's Famous, the original American hot dog that began on Coney Island in Brooklyn, and now sells hot dogs and other products throughout the nation and around the world, is celebrating its 100th Anniversary in 2016. As part of a series of special events and promotions in Coney Island and across the country, Nathan's will offer hot dogs for just 5 cents, the original 1916 Coney Island price, at the original Nathan's Famous store at the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues on Saturday, May 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (limit two hot dogs per person).

Raise a glass! It was just announced by Pulitzer Prize administrator Mike Pride that HAMILTON has officially won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The Friends of the Mansfield Public Library are bringing critically acclaimed author and novelist Amanda Eyre Ward to the Mansfield Public Library as part of the group's Mansfield Reads! program on April 29, 2016, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event, known as Evening With The Author, marks the culmination of Reads!, which encourages everyone in the Mansfield community to read the same book at the same time. This year's Reads! selection was Ward's novel, The Same Sky, a beautiful and heart-wrenching piece of fiction about motherhood, resilience and faith. Ward, a former librarian and current Austin resident, is a critically acclaimed author of five novels, including the bestseller How to Be Lost. She spent 2014 visiting shelters in Texas and California, meeting immigrant children and hearing their stories, which inspired The Same Sky. The Evening With The Author, a free event, will follow this schedule: •6 p.m. - Hors d'oeuvres catered by Ben Barber High School's Savvy's Bistro. •7 p.m. - The Friends welcome Ward for an interview-style discussion about her novel followed by time for the audience to ask questions •8 p.m. - Book signing and coffee & desserts Barnes & Noble will offer all of Ward's books for sale at the event. Through the retailer's Book Fair program, a percentage of the sales proceeds will go the Friends. The Same Sky highlights a ripped-from-the-headlines story of two families on each side of the U.S.-Mexico border. The book alternates between the journeys of Carla, an eleven-year-old girl from Honduras who decides to make the dangerous trip north to find her mother in Texas, and Alice, a wife in Austin with a thriving business and loving marriage who feels something is missing, lying just beyond reach. Judith Sloan is a masterful actor/dialectition and a sublime mixologist of sound. She blends both gifts in her newest play, 'YO MISS!,' in which she channels her own family's traumas through the experiences of immigrant and minority teens whom she has taught in arts programs over the last two decades.

In association with its mission to present new voices from inadequately represented communities, Halcyon Theatre will host a one-night-only post-show discussion immediately following the 8p.m. performance of Estrella Cruz [the junkyard queen] Friday, February 19. The panel will address social issues facing young Latina women as reflected in Estrella Cruz, including young motherhood. The expert panel features Maureen Mena, Association of Latino Professionals for America board member; Tamika Lechee Morales, Halcyon Theatre company member (and Estrella Cruz cast member); and Yesenia Villaseñor, Assistant General Counsel at Exelon Corporation. Teatro Paraguas continues its 12th season with Mike Batistick's 2006 play Port Authority Throw Down. Directed by Rick Vargas, the play is set in Fall 2003 at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City, and focuses on the lives of two college-educated Pakistani immigrant brothers selling newspapers and driving a taxi to make ends meet.
