BWW Review: 5-Star Theatricals' HUNCHBACK On Top of the World
by Don Grigware - Apr 23, 2018

The Hunchback of Notre Dame/book by Peter Parnell/lyrics by Stephen Schwartz/music by Alan Menken/directed by Misti B. Wills/choreographed by Michelle Elkin/musical director: Dan Redfeld/5-Star Theatricals (formerly Cabrillo Music Theatre), Civic Arts Plaza, Thousand Oaks/through April 29 ONLY Victor Hugo's monumental romantic/gothic novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame, published in 1831, centers in, around and on top of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France. The musical of the same name written by Peter Parnell, Stephen Schwartz and Alan Menken, a regional revival at 5 Star Theatricals in Thousand Oaks, presents the cathedral interior and exterior with the belltower and bells dominating the scene. This touring set represents the entire world of bellringer Quasimodo (Will North), who lives like a prisoner, confined within its walls.

by Jeffrey Walker - Apr 1, 2018

Boasting an impressive production and stellar cast, Riverside Center for the Performing Arts is presenting the professional DC-Northern Virginia regional premiere of the dark and romantic musical THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. It is well worth the trip along Interstate 95 to hear the rich score and lyrics by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, respectively, and be taken in by the sumptuous production, one of the biggest I have had the pleasure of seeing at this venue.

by Heidi Scheuermann - Mar 1, 2018

This score was something I didn't appreciate as a kid because I was too scared to watch the movie again, and I'm glad she had the sense to make me sing it. It's just gorgeous. Fast forward again to this past weekend when I saw THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME presented live at Jefferson Performing Arts Society (JPAS). Stunning is the word that comes to mind.

Casting Controversy Leads to Online Threats Against High School Students
by Nicole Ciravolo - Feb 8, 2018

The Ithaca High School production of THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME has been cancelled following an outcry over the lack of diversity in casting. However, the national attention placed on the school has lead to online threats. The Ithaca Journal reported that students complained when a white actress was cast in the role of Esmerelda, a part intended to be portrayed as a Romani person living in 15th century Paris. In recent productions, including its 2014 premiere at La Jolla Playhouse and the New Jersey's 2015 production at the Paper Mill Playhouse, a woman of color -- Ciara Renee -- was cast in the leading role. Additionally, the 1996 Disney film animates Esmerelda with a dark complexion, and this is the film that the students of Ithaca High School grew up watching. An African-American Ithaca High School student told the Ithaca Journal, 'It shows you that, if you can't get the parts that are written for you, what parts are you going to get?'

BWW Review: THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (MUSICAL) rings in at Great Lakes Theater
by Roy Berko - Oct 13, 2017

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is not a typical Disney stage creation. It is a dark, brooding musical and probably not appropriate for children. While the first act is rather slow, the second act is strong. It is well worth seeing.

The Musicalization of Animation: How Broadway Made the Big Screen Sing
by Nicole Rosky - May 13, 2017

In 1937, Snow White advised us to whistle while we work. In 1940, Jiminy Cricket taught us the power of wishing upon a star. Sleeping Beauty walked with us once upon a dream in 1959, and in 1967, Baloo gave us life lessons in the bare necessities. The stories we remember, but it's the songs from our favorite animated movies that have left an even deeper impression.
