BWW Review: BASKERVILLE at Shea's 710 Theatre
by Michael Rabice - May 11, 2018

A modern take on an old classic can be risky business, and morphing a murder mystery into a comical farce sounds intriguing on the page. Micro sized casts have done wonders with Hitchcock's 'The 39 Steps' and Charles Ludlam's 'The Mystery of Irma Vep,' so it is no surprise that comic playwright Ken Ludwig, known best for his brilliant 'Lend Me A Tenor' should take a stab at the genre. His adaptation of the classic Sherlock Holmes mystery 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' has been shortened to 'BASKERVILLE' and opened last night at Shea's 710 Theatre. This production by MUSICALFARE unfortunately is high on hijinks and low on true comedy. (more...)

BWW Review: Park Square Theatre Reinvents a Classic Tale in the Endlessly Delightful BASKERVILLE: A SHERLOCK HOLMES MYSTERY
by Jill Schafer - Jul 6, 2018

Staging a mystery play during the summer is a longstanding tradition at Park Square Theatre, and I've come to look forward to it every year. It's always fun to immerse yourself in the light yet brain-teasing summer blockbuster fare. But their production of KEN LUDWIG'S BASKERVILLE: A SHERLOCK HOLMES MYSTERY is anything but traditional. This new play tells one of the most well known Sherlock stories in a fresh, fun, and imaginative way, with just five actors and a whirlwind, almost slapstick style. Director Theo Langason brings all the innovation and physical storytelling experience from Sandbox Theatre, of which he is an ensemble member, to bear on this wonderfully playful and endlessly delightful production. And the fantastic five-person cast is so playful and fun to watch, including a female Holmes and Watson, because why not?! At a time when so many of us need it, BASKERVILLE provides pure escapist summer fun. (more...)

BWW Review: Clevelanders Invade Canada for the Shaw Festival 2018
by Roy Berko - Aug 6, 2018

The Shaw Festival, located in Niagara-on-the Lake, is often like being in downtown Cleveland on game day. Lots of 216/440 residents migrate North for a day, days or a week to visit 'the most beautiful little city in Canada,' as Niagara-on-the Lake is often called. They purchase peaches, cherries, and nectarines, tour the wine country and attend plays at The Shaw. It also doesn't hurt that the present exchange rate is $ .77 American for the Canadian dollar. (For the non- mathematical-Americans get a little over 20-cents back for every dollar they spend. Use credit cards to get the highest exchange rate.) (more...)

BWW Review: A WITTY WHODUNNIT IN 'THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES' at SHAW FESTIVAL
by Michael Rabice - Aug 20, 2018

How do you dust off an old classic and make it engaging and fresh for a 21st Century audience. The Shaw Festival has done just that in its gem of production The Hound of the Baskervilles. Many have heard the title but may not be familiar with the details of the intriguingly convoluted case that Sherlock Holmes and his pal Dr. Watson take on. (more...)

Photo Flash: Sierra Rep Presents BASKERVILLE A Sherlock Holmes Mystery
by BWW News Desk - Aug 15, 2018

Sierra Rep is proud to present Ken Ludwig's Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery, a fast-paced comedy that faithfully hews to Arthur Conan Doyle's novel about Holmes and Watson vs. evil. The game's afoot as male heirs of the Baskerville line are being murdered one by one. The renowned sleuth Sherlock Holmes, along with his trusted sidekick Doctor Watson, must work feverishly to crack the curse before it dooms the newest heir. Five talented actors, playing forty quirky characters, follow leads, unravel clues, hit dead-ends, and zigzag through the story until the shockingly funny conclusion. The gimmick here is that our pair of protagonists are surrounded by an ensemble of three delightful comic actors who play everyone else. Watching our troupe change among 40 different characters, both quickly off-stage (and even more quickly on-stage) is nothing short of amazing. (more...)
