Greenway Arts Alliance (Whitney Weston and Pierson Blaetz, Co-Founders and Co-Artistic Directors) announced the cast and creative team for the THE COLOR PURPLE, which will play at the Greenway Court Theatre (544 N. Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles). Performances run from November 9 through December 9 with the official press opening on Saturday, November 10. The Tony Award-winning musical features a book by Marsha Norman and music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. Directing and choreographing the cast of 15 is NAACP Theater Award-winner Jeffrey Polk (Smokey Joe's Cafe).

The Blind Boys of Alabama have the rare distinction of being recognized around the world as both living legends and modern-day innovators. They are not just gospel singers borrowing from old traditions; the group helped to define those traditions in 20th century and almost single-handedly created a new gospel sound for the 21st. The group will be at the Marcus Center's Wilson Theater at Vogel Hall on Saturday, January 26 at 7:30 pm. Tickets go on sale this Thursday, November 15 at 12:00 pm. Onassis USA is pleased to announce thatcelebrated artist Kostis Velonis's large-scale sculptural work Life Without Tragedy has now been installed on Governors Island, where it will remain on view, free of charge, today through October 31, 2019. Life Without Tragedy, developed with architect Christian Kotzamanisand initially created for the acclaimed Onassis Festival 2019: Democracy Is Coming (during which it could be seen on Astor Place, April 10-30, free of charge), explores the intersection of democracy and theater-perhaps Greece's two greatest contributions. The work consists of three wood sculptures that mimic an ancient Greek amphitheater, a place that was a social institution and a site for political discourse as well as a venue for art.

This Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning drama will be presented at Virginia Rep's November Theatre (114 West Broad Street) beginning February 7th, 2020 with two preview performances on Wednesday, February 5th and Thursday, February 6th. August Wilson's powerful masterwork will be onstage through March 1st. Fences is presented as part of the Acts of Faith Festival.

The mysterious guitar playing shapeshifter knocks on Creative Cauldron's doors again in Thunder Knocking on the Door, a blues musical fable written by Keith Glover, with lyrics and music by three-time Grammy award winner Keb' Mo' and Anderson Edwards. The acclaimed artists behind Creative Cauldron's Bold New Works productions, Stephen Gregory Smith and Matt Conner, are directing and choreographing the production. Smith received praise for his gorgeously and lovingly directed Thunder Knocking at the Door production, which played a sold out run at Creative Cauldron back in 2013. The show runs from February 14 March 10 at Creative Cauldron in Falls Church, 410 South Maple Avenue. Performances are Thursdays at 7:30PM, Fridays at 7:30PM, Saturdays at 7:30PM, and Sundays at 2:00PM & 7:00PM. Press Night is Saturday, February 16th at 7:30 pm.

Progressive Theater has announced its 2020 season. The 2nd season opens with 4 performances of THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS, co-produced with The Community Coalition on Race. The musical tells the truth of nine black boys who were ripped from a train in Alabama and accused of rape by two white women in 1931. Hauled to jail without a shred of actual evidence against them, The Scottsboro Boys were rushed through trial procedures, found guilty and sentenced to death. The cast includes Alcides Costa, April L. Barber, Bosa Mora, Brian Fender-Shirley, Donavon Chambers, Dorian Andrews, Jim E. Chandler, Jordan Owens, LeVane Harrington, Manny Milfort, Nasir Roper, Rodney Jackson, and Shawn-Herbert Felton. Performances run February 14th - 16th at The Burgdorff Center for The Performing Arts. Following all performances audience members are encouraged to participate in a post-show discussion.
