Six-time Tony Award-winning costume designer CATHERINE ZUBER and legendary scenic designer TONY STRAIGES are among the 2017 TDF/Irene Sharaff Awards recipients which were just announced by Theatre Development Fund (TDF), a not-for-profit service organization for the performing arts.

La Jolla Playhouse announces the cast and creative team for its 2017 Performance Outreach Program (POP) Tour production, #SuperShinySara, by Wesley Middleton, and helmed by acclaimed San Diego director and Moxie Theatre Artistic Director Delicia Turner Sonnenberg (Counterweight, Without Walls Festival 2013). The production will tour schools throughout San Diego County, now through March 31, 2017.

Lovers of opera will be delighted with the opportunity to hear the incomparable voice of  international Mezzo-Soprano Deborah Humble who, accompanied by pianist Sharolyn Kemmorley AM and the ASO's Imants Larsens, performs in Adelaide on 11 February.  Deborah will join the audience for afternoon tea following the performance. which is included in the ticket price.

Segerstrom Center for the Arts will present the World Premiere of American Ballet Theatre's new production of Whipped Cream, choreographed by ABT Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky, with sets and costumes by pop-surrealist Mark Ryden. ABT will give seven performances of the full-length work March 15-19, 2017 in Segerstrom Hall.

California Shakespeare Theater's 25th anniversary season at the Bruns Amphitheater continues with August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning story of the American Dream deferred, Fences, directed by Raelle Myrick-Hodges in her Cal Shakes debut. Fences, which plays from July 6 through July 31, marks the first time Cal Shakes has presented August Wilson's work on its stage. In this week's edition, we caught up with Ciaran Hinds, who stars as 'Deputy Governor Danforth' in The Crucible, playing at the Walter Kerr Theatre.

This weekend, local alternative theatre company L.I.P. Service Productions opened their newest work, LAUGHING WILD by Christopher Durang (author of the 2013 Tony Award-winning VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE). With only two speaking actors and a minimal stage, the oddball comedy centers around an strange, but unextraordinary event: a manic woman assaults an average man in the tuna fish aisle of a grocery store. Performed as two thirty-minute monologues and one thirty-minute scene, these over-the-top characters bounce back and forth like a pinball trying to rack up a bonus play in an arcade game. Although the style of comedy in LAUGHING WILD isn't necessarily my taste, I must admit I found myself laughing a number of times, especially as the stories eventually unfolded.

Rattlestick Playwrights Theater announces the 2015 F*ck!ng Good Plays (festival, VI). The festival, to be presented at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater (224 Waverly Place - off 7th Avenue South between West 11th & Perry Streets) will begin Saturday, December 5th, and continue thru Saturday, December 20th. The festival will kick off with readings of new plays by today's hottest playwrights!
