The Drama League has announced an inaugural event: First Stage Festival, where new works take their first steps, featuring 10 resident directors who will have 10 hours to focus and manifest a particular moment or element of 10 new works, giving a glimpse into the future of the American Theater.

REELZ today announced new original programming for July 2019 including six returning series, five new specials and the U.S. premiere of Air Crash Confidential about harrowing real life disasters that were made into movies. The dubious side of fame goes under the spotlight with returning series Notorious and the real stories about the Bling Ring thieves, the Balloon Boy hoax, disgraced politician Anthony Weiner and brand spokesperson Jared Fogle.

LAURA CHURCH MAKO, 102, of Beverly Hills, CA, died May 10, 2019, three weeks shy of her 103rd birthday. Laura Mae Church, born May 29, 1916 was a renowned interior designer and decorator for over 75 years.

On May 4, 2019, Los Angeles Opera presented a colorful, opulent production of Manuel Penella's opera EL GATO MONTES (THE WILDCAT) at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Starring in the cast were Placido Domingo as Juanillo, El Gato, with Ana Maria Martinez as Solea and Arturo Chacon-Cruz as Raphael, El Macareno. Needless to say the house was packed.

Numi Opera and its inaugural production -- Alexander Von Zemlinsky's Der Zwerg based on a story by Oscar Wilde -- is announced. Directed by Numi Opera Executive Director Gail R. “Audacious” can mean daring--and Belgian director Ivo van Hove certainly fits that description for his approaches to Arthur Miller's A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE and THE CRUCIBLE and numerous other theatre pieces. But when it came to Leos Janacek's DIARY OF ONE WHO DISAPPEARED, van Hove's work (with the Dutch company, Muziektheater Transparent) might take on another of the word's meanings: presumptuous and arrogant, perhaps, even disrespectful.

The Drama League has announced the twelve stage directors who have been selected as the 2019 Directing Fellows of The Drama League Directors Project: NJ Agwuna, Sharifa Elkady, Raz Golden, Chika Ike, Rebecca Marzalek-Kelly, Ismael Lara, Jr., Amanda McRaven, Lindsey Hope Pearlman, Ben Randle, Tai Thompson, Gabriel Torres, and Sophia Watt. Hal Linden, one of TV iconic personalities, will join the internationally acclaimed attraction "In the Mood" when its 25th Silver Celebration Tour rolls into Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, from April 23-27. Widely regarded as one of Ireland's most exciting young performers, star of PBS's Celtic Thunder, and multi award-winning Irish tenor Emmet Cahill will perform at the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center on March 16 at 7:30 pm, part of a nationwide tour of the United States. Cahill's show will include a mix of Irish classics ("Danny Boy," "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," "Cavan Girl"), Broadway and movie hits ("Bring Him Home," "Some Enchanted Evening," "Edelweiss") as well as love songs and contemporary tunes.

Harvey Williams, Founder and Executive Director of KC Melting Pot Theatre (KCMPT) in Kansas City announced that Dr. Nicole Hodges Persley has been appointed as Artistic Director. After three years as Associate Artistic Director, Hodges Persley has helped to position KCMPT as a theater company to watch in the Kansas City regional theater landscape. Under her creative influence, the company has produced timely and thought-provoking shows such as the revivals of Angelina W. Grimke's 1916 anti-lynching play Rachel and Amiri Baraka's 1964 Obie award-winning play Dutchman as well as cutting edge new American voices such as Pulitzer Prize winner Dominique Morriseau and emerging playwright Lewis J. Morrow.  Hodges Persley draws season inspiration from an eclectic array of sources from historic social and arts movements to #Black Lives Matter and African American music genres.

The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities continues the third season of its critically acclaimed Black Box Repertory on March 15, 2019, with the world premiere of Sin Street Social Club, a comedic adaptation about women discovering their destinies on the swinging streets of 1916 New Orleans written by Colorado creative Jessica Austgen and directed by Lynne Collins.  This production is underwritten by Diana and Mike Kinsey.  The 2018 - 2019 Theatre Season Presenting Sponsor is Lutheran Medical Center. 

Two American opera singers noted for their theatricality – one on the rise, the other an international star – headline the second George London Foundation recital of the season. Anthony Dean Griffey, the renowned tenor whose searing interpretation of the title role of Britten's Peter Grimes, among others, has brought him worldwide acclaim, and Amy Owens, a “scene-stealing” (Broadway World) “radiant soprano” (Opera News) who won an award at the 2018 George London Awards competition, perform the second George London Foundation Recital of the season at The Morgan Library and Museum on Sunday, March 24, 2019, at 4:00 pm. They are joined by Warren Jones at the piano, and guest artists David Heiss, cello, and Cindy Wu, violin.
