Martin Drapkin Launches New Book, THE CAT TENDER
by Christina Mancuso - Aug 16, 2016

Maggie Mullen likes nothing better than following the cozy bedtime routine that she and her beloved cat, Lucy, have created, and listening to the dulcet tones of Frank Sinatra (and having romantic Frank fantasies). There's just one problem: Maggie said yes when her younger sister, Mindy, asked her to be her maid of honor. A new novel released by Dog Ear follows the ups and downs of that sisterly commitment. Maggie, 27, loves the simple life she leads, watching over other people's cats; checking out reality televisions shows featuring stories of births, including births by women who didn't know they were pregnant, or Jackson Galaxy fixing problem cats; fantasizing about how her clients met or live their lives; and spending time with her own precious feline while taking her nightly bath. Of course, sometimes she wishes she had someone special to be with on Valentine's Day besides the cats she cares for, but she keeps busy watching over her charges. 'The Cat Tender' shares how the duties of being a maid of honor bring all kinds of unwelcome obligations: spending money she doesn't have on a dress two sizes too big (with matching shoes and a special bra that come with equally high price tags), coming up with a loving toast and organizing a bachelorette party. Can Maggie step out of her comfort zone do this for her pretty sister or will the event forever change how she looks at life? This is the third published book by Drapkin, who has written and published nonfiction books and articles on county jail operations. His previous books are 'Now and at the Hour' in 2009 and 'Ten Nobodies (and Their Somebodies)' in 2012. As a photographer, Drapkin specializes in black-and-white portraits of mothers and their daughters, as well as taking street photographs. He and his wife, Erica, have a daughter and two grandsons. They live in Cross Plains, Wis., with several neurotic cats and dogs.
