Throughout my life one song's melody and lyrics have played on a continuous loop. I've heard it sung by my wife's Russian family and their friends at parties and family affairs. Last night that song in the hands of Charles Busch at Feinstein's/54 Below was it's most heartfelt and profound interpretation I've ever experienced.

Cantando Na Chuva (Singin' in the Rain) is set in the roaring '20s and silent movie stars are the biggest names in the world. Don Lockwood (Jarbas Homem de Mello) has it all, a string of hit films and a studio-engineered romance with the most beautiful actress in town, Lina Lamont (Claudia Raia). A LESSON BEFORE DYING by Romulus Linney is based on the novel by Ernest J. Gaines. I remember reading the book, and I was familiar with the screen adaptation starring Don Cheadle and Mekhi Phifer, but the stage play I didn't know. So, the Encore Theatre's production, directed by Harold J. Haynes, was something I was looking forward to.

Kansas City Ballet Artistic Director Devon Carney today announced the 2016-2017 season. The 59th season will open with the full length, lighthearted Shakespearian frolic, A Midsummer Night's Dream, choreography by Bruce Wells with music by Felix Mendelssohn.

Thursday night at Feinstein's/54 Below, Scott Siegel--the busiest cabaret show producer in town--hosted a tribute to Cole Porter's classic musical, Kiss Me Kate, as part of the 2015 BroadwayWorld Award-nominated 54 Below Sings . . . series. With Siegel at the lectern filling in plot, Musical Director Ross Patterson on piano, and contributions by The Broadway By the Year Chorus, the evening was vivacious and fun.
