The Aviva Players will begin its 40th season on October 16 with 'Songs, Piano Rags & Chamber Music by Women Composers, including the Piano Trio by Fanny Mendelssohn,' the first installment of a three-part concert series at Opera America, 330 Seventh Ave.  The concert will include piano rags by May Frances Aufderheide, Irene Giblin and Adeline Shepard; songs by Mira J. Spektor, and 'Vocal Duets' and 'The Piano Trio' by Fanny Mendelssohn.  The evening is presented in conjunction with Downtown Music Productions.

Golf Channel announced today that each of the semifinalist teams from the 2015 Division I NCAA Men's and Women's Golf Championships have committed to compete in the inaugural East Lake Cup match play championship, airing live on the network Nov. 2-3 at historic East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga.

TheatreWorks Silicon Valley continues its 2015/2016 season with David Auburn's brilliant contemporary drama Proof, winner of the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. This riveting masterpiece tells the still timely tale of a young woman caught in a quest for legitimacy in the male dominated world of high-level science. It is a mystery of family instability and fledgling romance, an exhilarating, funny, and fulfilling tribute to the humanity that permeates our world of equations, equivocations, and codes. Long before the devil wore Prada -- 20 years ago, in fact -- the story of the irrepressible Diana Vreeland first commanded the stage of the Globe in a world premiere in 1995. Oscar and Tony Award winner Mercedes Ruehl (The Fisher King, Lost in Yonkers) now brings "The Empress of Fashion" back in FULL GALLOP. Written by Mark Hampton and Mary Louise Wilson and directed by Andrew Russell, FULL GALLOP will run September 26 through October 25, 2015, with opening night on Thursday, October 1 at 8:00 p.m., in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center.

Fathom Events, New Line Cinema, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures will present all three extended editions of The Hobbit Trilogy across a three-night theatrical event, featuring The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on Monday, October 5; The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug on Wednesday, October 7; and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies on Tuesday, October 13. Each of the features will play at 7:30 p.m. local time. This is the first time that the extended editions have been shown in movie theaters, including the never-before-seen extended edition of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. In addition to the events, there will be a special on-screen introduction from the Trilogy's director, co-screenwriter and producer Peter Jackson.

The Kennedy Center, in association with the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, the National New Play Network (NNPN)-the country's alliance of non-profit theaters that champions the development, production, and continued life of new plays-and with Stanford University's National Center for New Plays, will host more than 50 playwrights, directors, and dramaturgs from July 25 to August 2, 2015 as part of the 10th annual weeklong MFA Playwrights' Workshop featuring new works by MFA students from Columbia University, Northwestern University, Fordham University, Yale School of Drama, the Juilliard School, New York University-Tisch School of the Arts, University of California-San Diego, and the Juilliard School.

The Old Globe today announced the complete cast and creative team for the West Coast premiere of an exciting new American play, Rich Girl, by acclaimed playwright Victoria Stewart, continuing the Globe's 80th Anniversary festivities as part of the Balboa Park Centennial Celebration. Rich Girl will be directed by James Vasquez (Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show), and will play May 23 - June 21, 2015, in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center.
