Puccini’s masterpiece La bohème combines friendship, passion and tragedy to create one of the world’s most popular operas. Having been staged so many times, there is an understandable temptation to alter the setting, but does it work or is it change for change's sake?

The Greek National Opera partners with one of the most important and historic opera houses in Europe, the Opéra Comique in Paris, for an adaptation of Jacques Offenbach's Le Voyage dans la Lune, staged and with costumes by the acclaimed French director Laurent Pelly, and featuring the children's and youth choruses of both institutions.

The first of four works presented in this dynamic program is George Balanchine's Kammermusik No. 2, a “fascinating” and “unremitting” ballet, followed by the dazzling and technically demanding The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude by William Forsythe that returns to Boston Ballet after a critically acclaimed Company premiere last season (Brian Seibert, The New York Times). Adding to the evening's exceptional program is the graceful Pas de Quatre by unsung choreographer Leonid Yakobson, a classically romantic work noted for its “distinctive movement sensibility” (Roslyn Sulcas,The New York Times). Concluding the program is Léonide Massine's colorful Gaîté Parisienne, an effervescent ballet that evokes Moulin Rouge and Paris in the early 1900s, and ends with an unforgettable can-can.  Kaleidoscope will run March 17–26, 2016 at the Boston Opera House.

Toronto –   The Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio, Canada's premier training program for young opera professionals, welcomes seven outstanding new artists for the 2016/2017 season: sopranos Danika Lorènand Samantha Pickett, mezzo-sopranos Emily D'Angelo, Lauren Eberwein and Megan Quick, baritone Bruno Roy, and pianist Stéphane Mayer. The seven artists join the Ensemble Studio in August 2016 and become part of an illustrious program that, since its inception in 1980, has launched the careers of over 215 Canadian singers, opera coaches, mainstage directors and conductors.

The New York Philharmonic's 2015 holiday season presents classic masterpieces and seasonal favorites, the Philharmonic's Artist-in-Residence and Artist-in-Association as well as debuts, and continuing and new traditions. Toronto – Emily D'Angelo of Toronto took home First Prize (the Chair's Prize) at the Canadian Opera Company's annual Ensemble Studio Competition on November 3, 2015 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. The competition is the feature event of the COC fundraiser Centre Stage, a highly anticipated annual celebration of the next generation of opera stars. D'Angelo was selected from eight finalists to receive the $5,000 award, supported annually by the Chair of the COC's Board of Directors. Lauren Eberwein of Qualicum Beach, BC won the Second Prize of $3,000, and Bruno Roy of Montreal was awarded the Third Prize of $1,500. Emily D'Angelo was also selected by the audience as the winner of the Audience Choice Award, worth $1,500.

Conducted by Jürgen Petrenko, the performances are fully staged with orchestra at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts on May 1, 2, 3, 4 (mat). “Our COUSIN FROM NOWHERE performances will be the icing on the cake for our current season,” said TOT General Director Guillermo Silva-Marin. “It's a very special work, a chamber operetta really, written by a Berliner who incorporated American and Latin dance rhythms into a lyric framework.” The performances are supported by a generous grant from the Canada Council for the Arts.

The New Actors Company in association with Neil McPherson for the Finborough Theatre presents THE GRAND DUKE. The Finborough Theatre's 'Celebrating British Music Theatre' series continues with the first fully staged professional UK production of Gilbert and Sullivan's final operetta, The Grand Duke, since the original 1896 production. It opens at the Finborough Theatre for a strictly limited run of six Sundays and Mondays from Sunday, 1 April 2012.

Actress and writer Suzanne Grossmann has died, Variety reports. Grossmann died on August 19 in Lose Angeles at the age of 72. Her death was due to Chronic Obstructed Pulmonary Disorder.
