Celebrating The Life And Legacy Of Islington Landowner Richard Cloudesley And The Magical Story Of A Stony Field

In 1517, Islington landowner Richard Cloudesley bequeathed a plot of land known as "The Stony Fields" or "The Fourteen Acre" in perpetuity for a variety of social and religious purposes. Fields grazed by cattle in the 16th century today deliver an income which funds annual grants of £900,000 to local residents in need, local charities, community projects and Church of England churches. And this year, to mark the 500th anniversary of Richard Cloudesley's bequest, an additional £1.2million of grants are being made. These include health grants for Islington charities and schools, and an award-winning Sustainable Church Buildings Project to reduce the carbon footprint of local church buildings.

Theatre for a New Audience (TFANA; Jeffrey Horowitz, Founding Artistic Director) announces a free post-performance discussion moderated by Pulitzer Prize-winning theatre critic and Negroland: A Memoir author Margo Jefferson in connection with TFANA's world premiere production of Adrienne Kennedy's He Brought Her Heart Back in a Box. The talk, which begins at 8.30 PM is open to all and features director Charlotte Braithwaite and playwrights Lydia Diamond and Jackie Sibblies Drury, follows the January 20 performance of Kennedy's first new play in a decade, which begins at 7:30 that evening, at Polonsky Shakespeare Center (262 Ashland Place, Brooklyn, NY 11217). Garth Fagan Dance has four premieres up its sleeve for its Joyce Theater engagement, November 7-12. Two of the new dances, In Conflict and Estrogen/Genius, are by Fagan, the Tony-winning choreographer of The Lion King; the other two premieres, Wecoo Duende and A Moderate Cease, are by the company's long-time dancer and Fagan muse Norwood Pennewell.

BWW Review: 1984 at Outré Theatre Company

The Outre Theatre Company presents the first production of its 2017/18 season, George Orwell's 1984, in its new home at the recently opened Pompano Beach Cultural Center. The play 1984 is based on George Orwell's dystopian novel published in 1949. In 2005 the novel was chosen by Time magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels. Many of its terms and concepts, such as Big Brother, doublethink, thoughtcrime, cold war, and Newspeak have permanently entered into common use since its first publication.

Jon Washburn Announces Transition at the Vancouver Chamber Choir

After 46 years, the Vancouver Chamber Choir's founder and long-time conductor Jon Washburn is announcing his intent to step down as Artistic and Executive Director to become the professional choral ensemble's Conductor Emeritus. He will continue to lead the Choir through its 47th and 48th concert seasons (2017/18 and 2018/19) while the organization searches for his successor. Once that new person is designated he will assume his new role as Conductor Emeritus and principal guest conductor.

Renee Fleming Reports She's Not Quitting Opera Yet!

According to an article published in the New York Times, they reported that 'Renee Fleming has announced that she will be retiring from the opera stage,' stating that her final performance will be of 'Der Rosenkavalier' at the Metropolitan Opera on May 13th.  However, the NPR now reveals new information that the diva is not quitting just yet.

Music Director Leonard Slatkin Conducts Orchestre National de Lyon First American Tour Since 2003

Beginning February 18, the Orchestre National de Lyon, “probably the most refined ensemble of the world” (The Guardian),  tours the United States for the first time since 2003, playing concerts with music director Leonard Slatkin on a six-city tour.  The Orchestra performs in renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and at the University of Georgia, Wake Forest University, and others. Special guest artists at Carnegie Hall include two of classical music's most treasured American voices, soprano Renée Fleming and baritone Thomas Hampson.  The New York program will feature debut performances of Guillaume Connesson's Celephaïs and a new Ravel arrangement of Rimsky-Korsakov's Antar with text by Amin Maalouf.
