Happy New Year, BroadwayWorld! As we eagerly anticipate the amazing musicals and plays coming up in 2016, we're taking a moment to look back at the significant Broadway closings of 2015.

The Old Globe today announced it will present the Third Annual New Voices Festival, a weekend of readings of new American plays by professional playwrights, January 15 - 17, 2016.

Tony Award-winning Broadway producer Stacey Mindich will be presented The Commercial Theater Institute's Robert Whitehead Award for "outstanding achievement in commercial theatre producing" at a reception at Sardi's on Tuesday, March 15, 2016.

SHN announced today that individual tickets for the San Francisco premiere of the 2014 Tony Award-winning Best Musical Revival HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH will go on sale Friday, December 11 at 10am through shnsf.com and 888-746-1799.

Broadway's 40 theatres aren't the only places to catch performances from your favorite stars! Well after Broadway orchestras begin their overtures, ensemble members take their dance breaks, and performers belt out their eleven o'clock numbers, the party continues at various cabaret venues throughout New York City. A limited Off-Broadway engagement plays now through December 27 at The Pershing Square Signature Center (The Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre, 480 West 42nd Street), with Official Opening Night set for tonight, November 18.

The New Group presents the world premiere of STEVE, a new play by Mark Gerrard. Directed by Cynthia Nixon, this production features Ashlie Atkinson and Francisco Pryor Garat, and as announced, Mario Cantone, Jerry Dixon, Malcolm Gets and Matt McGrath. A limited Off-Broadway engagement plays tonight, November 3, through December 27 at The Pershing Square Signature Center (The Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre, 480 West 42nd Street), with Official Opening Night set for Wednesday, November 18.

Labyrinth Theater Company (Artistic Director Mimi O'Donnell, Executive Director Danny Feldman) presents a free, Halloween performance of Empanada Loca at 10pm on October 31. All tickets for this performance will be distributed via an online lottery system at labtheater.org. The lottery will open on October 26 at noon and will close at noon on October 30 at noon and winners will be contacted by 2pm.

Performers from the beloved Off-Broadway musical BARE are coming together to honor the show's late creator, Damon Intrabartolo, tonight, October 12, at Feinstein's/ 54 Below at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

The 8th Annual Fire Island Pines Literary and Theater Weekend will feature two-time Tony and Emmy Award-winner Andrea Martin (slated for Broadway's upcoming produection of NOISES OFF) and Emmy nominee and theatre multihyphenate Seth Rudetsky, in performance and signing copies of their latest publications: ANDREA MARTIN'S LADY PARTS, a memoir by Ms. Martin, and THE RISE AND FALL OF A THEATER GEEK, Mr. Rudetsky's latest young adult novel.

Yale Repertory Theatre opens its 2015-16 season with the world premiere of INDECENT, a new play with music, written by Paula Vogel, created by Paula Vogel and Rebecca Taichman, and directed by Rebecca Taichman, at the University Theatre (222 York Street), now through October 24. Opening Night is tonight, October 8. The world premiere of INDECENT is a co-production with La Jolla Playhouse, where it will play November 13-December 10.

On Monday, September 28, the Theater People podcast welcomes back Tony-winner Laura Benanti for part 2 of her interview. The first part of the interview launched earlier this month. In this episode, Benanti discusses her work in the short-lived WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN for which the actress received her fourth Tony nomination. Benanti also discusses her television work including the hugely popular SOUND OF MUSIC LIVE!, NASHVILLE, and the upcoming SUPERGIRL. Additionally, she discussed working with the Radio City Rockettes in last year's SPRING SPECTACULAR, and writing her first book.

Today, the producers of Hedwig and the Angry Inch announced that the record-breaking musical has raised over $600,000 for Hetrick-Martin Institute during the production's record-breaking run at the Belasco Theatre (111 West 44th Street).

When HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH opened off-Broadway in 1998, I'd just entered high school. As a teenage theatre geek in Massachusetts, my only available resources were local theatres, and the few Broadway cast recordings sold at the local mall, so I remained oblivious. When the 2001 movie was later produced, I'd grown to identify as a member of the LGBT community, but queer independent films were far off my radar, despite the cult following that had quickly developed surrounding this particular film. Now, although I will miss the recent Broadway revival of HEDWIG (which will close on September 13), I've grown familiar with the material, thanks in part to YouTube, and many years of visiting the famous Musical Theatre Mondays at NYC's Splash bar (R.I.P.), which frequently showed clips of "Wig in a Box," "Wicked Little Town," and "The Origin of Love."
