INDECENT and WEST SIDE STORY Round Out Guthrie's 2017-18 Season

The Guthrie Theater today announced the final two of nine productions to be offered as part of the theater's 2017-2018 subscription season: Indecent, a new play with music by Pulitzer Prize-winner Paula Vogel (How I Learned to Drive), conceived by Vogel and Rebecca Taichman; and the Guthrie's first production of the iconic American musical West Side Story, directed by Joseph Haj.

The Washington National Opera opened Dead Man Walking on February 25, which continues throughMarch 11, 2017 in the Opera House. It is based on Sister Helen Prejean's acclaimed 1993 memoir, which tells of her time working with death row inmates at Louisiana State Penitentiary and of a particular relationship she developed with one of the inmates. The opera explores the human conflicts posed by society's demands for vengeance and the Christian imperative for forgiveness and love. The lyrical score by composer Jake Heggie (WNO's Moby-Dick, 2014) is widely regarded as a modern classic, while Terrence McNally's balanced libretto has been called one of the most perfect librettos of an American opera ever written.

INDECENT - Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel's newest work, one of the most acclaimed plays of 2016 when it debuted in New York Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre - will premiere on Broadway at the Cort Theatre (138 W 48th St New York, NY), this spring, with previews set to begin early April prior to opening April 18, it has been announced by producers Daryl Roth, Elizabeth Ireland McCann and Cody Lassen, who will present the Vineyard Theatre production in association with La Jolla Playhouse and Yale Repertory Theatre. The performance schedule has been changed for 'Light Up The Night,' a theatrical concert of rediscovered and restored Yiddish theater songs by Ellstein, Goldfaden, Olshanetsky, Rumshinsky, and Secunda, to be presented by National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene (NYTF) January 1 in Edmond J. Safra Hall at Museum of Jewish Heritage, 36 Battery Place, Manhattan.  Originally two shows were planned, at 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM.  The 2:00 PM performance continues as scheduled but the 6:00 PM performance has been canceled.

Atar Hadari's penetrating new play, Merciful Father will open UP Theater's seventh season. The World Premiere of Merciful Father will runNovember 1st through November 12th in Northern Manhattan. The play is based on Sholem Asch's scandalous Yiddish play God of Vengeance which was the inspiration for Paula Vogel's new play, Indecent which premiered at the Vineyard Theatre last season. God of Vengeance premiered on Broadway at the Apollo Theatre in 1923 and featured Broadway's first lesbian kiss. The play was so far ahead of its time, the actors and producers were indicted for giving an immoral performance. Atar Hadari's, Merciful Father is a proactive new take on the story. The production is directed by UP's Artistic Director, James Bosley who has premiered three of his play with UP, including the critically acclaimed productions of Broad Channel, and Epic Poetry.

The Tony-nominated director Eleanor Reissa is set to helm New Yiddish Rep's contemporary staging of Sholem Asch's notorious drama 'God of Vengeance' at La MaMa this winter. The Yiddish language production's Off-Broadway opening is on Christmas Day, Sunday December 25 at 7:30pm with previews beginning Thursday December 22.  It will run for five weeks and 33 performances through Sunday January 22.
