First he wrote the best-selling book. Then came the Oscar-winning movie. Now Billy Hayes comes to the New York stage with his powerful one-man show, RIDING THE MIDNIGHT EXPRESS with BILLY HAYES, directed by John Gould Rubin.

Watching their neighborhood get swept up in the Jersey Shore's second worst storm in history was disheartening for Point Pleasant resident, Cheryl Larkin and her daughter Kate Kurelja. In an effort to aid Hurricane Sandy victims, they decided to create a cookbook, titled Savoring the Shore in celebration of the Jersey Shore. Featuring over one hundred and fifty recipes from notable New Jersey chefs and at-home cooks, the cookbook also consists of stories and photos in remembrance of what the shore once was. After months of collecting and tasting recipes, Savoring the Shore has hit the shelves one year after Hurricane Sandy.

Last December, after I posted my list of the Best Cabaret Performers of 2012, I followed up my original 'listmania' with a column that served as a way to include some 'honorable mentions,' basically a recognition of other memorable shows and performances of songs that were striking, unique, and/or original that year. The column received a positive response so I thought I'd wheel it out again this year. So as the hours tick away on 2013 and we anticipate the coming of a new year, here is an addendum to the 2013 New York Cabaret Performers of the Year--a totally random list of 30 Honorable Mentions of the 'Best' and 'Most' in Cabaret for 2013 . . . mainly because I can and it's fun. NOW Billy Hayes comes to the New York stage with his powerful one-man show, RIDING THE MIDNIGHT EXPRESS with BILLY HAYES, directed by John Gould Rubin.

With it's catchy tunes (including the ever popular rendition of "My Guy"), fun-loving nuns, and a bit of crime on the side, this movie became a household favorite. Much to our pleasure, the movie was turned into SISTER ACT THE MUSICAL, and made its debut on Broadway in 2011. The show is currently touring North America, and makes its way to New Orleans this week.

The festival is proud to present the lineup for the 2014 film festival to be held February 6-9, 2014.

In the beginning, Touchstone released a 1992 comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg. And Touchstone saw the profits and they were good . And Touchstone said, 'Let there be a sequel,' and there was a sequel. And Touchstone called the sequel 'Back in the Habit' . . . and so on. Now, twenty-one years later, Deloris Van Cartier, aspiring diva thrust into a convent for witness protection has come to the Memphis Orpheum.

Julio Botti's ZOHO Music debut, TANGO NOSTALGIAS, introduces a fresh new voice to the nuevo tango movement pioneered decades ago by Astor Piazzolla and Pablo Ziegler, Piazzolla's longtime pianist and a prolific composer and producer in his own right. For this coming out party for the young Argentinian saxophonist, an instrument not normally associated with tango music, Ziegler has re-arranged some of his most potent compositions specifically with Botti's soaring soprano horn in mind.

In all honesty, I was dreading seeing Broadway Across America - Houston's presentation of SISTER ACT's First National Tour at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts last night. As a fan of Alan Menken, I was elated to get my hands on a copy of the Original London Cast Recording in 2009. After giving the disc a whirl, I was anything but impressed. The musical ran at the London Palladium from June 2, 2009 to October 30, 2010. As it journeyed across the pond, the book was significantly reworked by Douglas Carter Beane for its rather successful April 20, 2011 to August 26, 2012 Broadway run at the Broadway Theatre. Between London, New York, and Houston, magic has definitely happened. The show, as it stands now, is a divinely delightful comedy that will leave audiences pumped and gushing about how truly fabulous it is.
