Founded in 1979 as Florida Shakespeare Theatre, GableStage originally performed the plays of Shakespeare in repertory, using the outdoor Casino Gardens at Vizcaya. From 1987 to 1992, Florida Shakespeare Theatre was housed in the Minorca Playhouse in Coral Gables, until it was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew. But the theatre's mission could not be destroyed, and it continued to produce at the Carousel Theatre in Coral Gables in 1993 and 1994. In 1999, the theatre moved to its current home, the historic Biltmore Hotel, and became GableStage.

Saint Michael's Playhouse Producing Artistic Director Chuck Tobin today announced the June 21 opening of the Playhouse's 2016 summer theater season with the five-time Tony-nominated musical Sister Act, the sparkling smash hit musical comedy that the New York Post called 'ridiculously fun.'

Earlier this month, Boston Conservatory and New York City voice teacher James Javore passed away following a battle with prostate cancer. In celebration of his life, a group of alumni, past students, and colleagues will host an open memorial service this Saturday, May 7, at The Church of Latter Day Saints at 66th and Columbus at 2:00PM.

Today, we take a look back at the incredible careers, both stage and screen, of the cast of SPOTLIGHT, nominated for Best Picture. SPOTLIGHT is the story of how four Pulitzer Prize-winning columnists broke the story of the Boston archdiocese priest sex-abuse scandal in 2001. We are profiling three members of it's amazing cast, Brian d'Arcy James, Liev Schreiber, and Len Cariou.

Albert, announces an extension to its critically-acclaimed production of Terry Teachout's Satchmo at the Waldorf, directed by Charles Newell and featuring Barry Shabaka Henley. Court's production of Satchmo will be part of a community-wide Louis Armstrong Festival, happening in partnership with The Beverly Arts Center, The Logan Center at the University of Chicago, The Promontory, South Shore Jazz Coalition, The Louis Armstrong House Museum and the Louis Armstrong Archives at Queens College New York. This community-wide festival will help audiences deepen their understanding of Armstrong's life through musical performances, historical exhibits, symposium, talk-backs and film.

?Feinstein's/54 Below, Broadway's Supper Club, presents BROADWAY COUPLES SING I DO! I DO! on February 14th, 2016. To celebrate Valentine's Day, Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt's classic look into a fifty-year marriage will get a one night only, all-star concert, featuring some of Broadway's most legendary couples.

From January 19 to 23, Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute (WMI) presents The Song Continues, an annual series led by renowned mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne, exploring song repertoire through master classes and concerts with the goal of encouraging, supporting, and preserving the art of the vocal recital. The series concludes with the Marilyn Horne Song Celebration, a recital featuring special guest artist soprano Nina Stemme on Saturday, January 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Zankel Hall. The evening's concert also features performances by soprano Julia Bullock, mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack, tenor Andrew Haji, bass-baritone Evan Hughes, and pianists John Arida, Keun-A Lee, Ken Noda, and Jennifer Szeto. Internationally acclaimed actor Matthew Perry (Friends, The Odd Couple) leads the cast in the World Premiere of his playwriting debut, The End of Longing, at the Playhouse Theatre, London, from 2 February - 14 May 2016. Commissioned by Beth Morrison Projects and National Sawdust, and adapted by Scheib from Ingmar Bergman's film of the same name, Persona is a provocative, highly cerebral, and artistically complex depiction of human frailty, cruelty and identity. These world premiere performances—which represent the first opera staged at National Sawdust—feature music direction by Evan Ziporyn and music by the ensemble Either/Or.

The second program of the Royal Ballet of England's return to New York City after an 11-year hiatus – and the first appearance of the company at the Koch Theatre in Lincoln Center – was an ambitious but not entirely successful presentation of works by British choreographers. The greatest failing was not onstage but in the Playbill. No notes at all were included to help the audience appreciate the ballets and the music in a historical context. While I applaud the company as well as the presenting Joyce Theater Foundation for eschewing the standard story ballets in favor of repertory fare, I am at a loss to figure out why the dancegoers were not given any information other than titles, credits, and casting. On the afternoon of June 27th when I was there, I overheard many people during pauses and intermissions commenting that a little assistance in comprehending the inspiration and intent of the choreographers would have been appreciated.

When it comes to Irish theatre and the Tony Awards, the distance is never great.

The new artistic director at Hackmatack Playhouse might have been hired for her talent as an actor, dancer or choreographer. Crystal Lisbon of Dover also might have been chosen for her connections to theater in Boston. But ultimately, Lisbon was hired at this Berwick stage because she gets what it means to direct theater in a barn run by a family that has farmed the surrounding fields for three-plus centuries.

Next spring, Tony Award winners Audra McDonald, George C. Wolfe, and Savion Glover will team up to collaborate on SHUFFLE ALONG, Or, The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed, a musical about the events that led to the creation of the groundbreaking Eubie Blake-Noble Sissle musical Shuffle Along. Starring Audra McDonald as the 1920's star Lottie Gee, directed by George C. Wolfe -- with a book written by Wolfe -- and choreographed by Savion Glover, the musical marks the first time that the writer/director and choreographer will have worked together since their 1996 hit Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk. Previews will begin Monday, March 14, 2016. Opening night is Thursday, April 21, 2016 at the Music Box Theatre (239 West 45th Street).
