BWW Review: THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS a High-Energy, Fun Escape at Carrollwood Players Theatre
by Deborah Bostock-Kelley - Mar 3, 2019

Like Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper radiating adoration and raw sexual chemistry, singing "Shallow" at the Oscars, as Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd's hand roved up Miss Mona Stangley's lace stockings while they nuzzled on the couch, Angel Tuider Frale and Michael c De Baca scorched the stage at Carrollwood Players. The yearning for something more, an unrequited love was palatable. That's called great acting. (more...)

BWW Review: Washington National Opera's FAUST is a Devilishly Good Time
by Sam Abney - Mar 20, 2019

Few works have inspired such a long-lasting legacy as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust. The Faustian bargain has become a common expression for metaphorically selling one's soul in order to obtain their goals. Of course, the metaphor is much less metaphorical in von Goethe's work and, subsequently, the Charles Gounod opera which stems from this German classic. Gounod's opera isn't always perfect, but the Washington National Opera's new production which opened at the Kennedy Center on Saturday evening breathes enough life into this classic that you'll likely not notice the over three hours you've spent watching the drama unfold. Nashville-based, Boston-bred indie-folk songwriterJohn Shakespear is releasing his much-anticipated debut album Spend Your Youth on May 10th. Walking a fine line between the personal and the political,Spend Your Youth's origins are a coming-of-age story. As a lot of our most classic stories begin, Shakespear's coming-of-age happened amidst a time of escalating national division and social unease; a time where ideas of clarity or merriment or self are few and far between. Spend Your Youth opens with the line “nineteen ninety-four—precious years we had between the wars”, giving listeners an immediate idea of where these songs come from. BWW Review: THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG is a Perfect Recipe for Hysterical Disaster
by Tanya Seale - Mar 16, 2019

A play within a play, The Play that Goes Wrong is the tale of the Cornley University Drama Society which, despite several earlier snags, is opening their 1920s murder mystery, The Murder at Haversham Manor. In the moments just before the show opens, an audience member is recruited to help the tech crew (Ryan George as Trevor Watson and Ka-Ling Cheung as Annie Twilloil) mend a few set issues. No biggie, though. It's just a broken mantlepiece that holds several key props. And a main entrance from backstage with a door that won't stay closed. Or open. Or closed. There are a couple of floor planks that need to be nailed in, still. And there's a missing Duran Duran CD somewhere in the theatre. Oh, and a missing dog. What could possibly go wrong? Right? Mini Mansions, the beloved Los Angeles band comprising members of Queens of the Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys and The Last Shadow Puppets, recently announced their forthcoming album Guy Walks Into A Bar...which will be released July 26, 2019 on Fiction Records. The band shared the single for “GummyBear” last month and today Blackbook has premiered the video for the track saying ““GummyBear” is a groovily perky track that documents a stage in singer/guitarist Michael Shuman's recent ill-fated whirlwind relationship - and if the music makes you want to get up and dance, the neon lights, glitterball, and 70's vibe of the Liam Lynch directed video only serves to further emphasize the song's dancey DNA.”  (more...)
