This summer marks another historic milestone for the annual Bard SummerScape festival. For the first time since its founding, this season's focus is on the music and culture of Italy, with seven weeks of music, opera,theater, dance, film, and cabaret keyed to the theme of the 27th Bard Music Festival, "Puccini and His World." This intensive examination of the life and times of Giacomo Puccini opens a window onto Italy's rich musical heritage from Palestrina to Menotti, by way of the most popular and successful - yet, paradoxically, frequently critically underrated - opera composer of all time. Complementing the music festival, some of the Tuscan master's most compelling compatriots provide other key SummerScape highlights. These include a rare, fully staged production of Iris, a forerunner of Madama Butterfly by Puccini's close contemporary Pietro Mascagni; the world premiere of Demolishing Everything with Amazing Speed, four newly unearthed puppet plays from leading Italian Futurist Fortunato Depero, as reimagined by Dan Hurlin;the world premiere of Fantasque, a new ballet set to the music of Respighi and Rossini by John Heginbotham and Amy Trompetter; a film series on "Puccini and the Operatic Impulse in Cinema"; and the return of Bard's authentic and sensationally popularSpiegeltent,hosted by the inimitable Mx. Seattle Repertory Theatre reveals a first look at its 2016-2017 season, which will include the dazzling and emotionally gripping drama KING CHARLES III by Mike Bartlett. Produced in association with American Conservatory Theater and Shakespeare Theatre Company and directed by David Muse, Seattle Rep will present this award-winning smash hit in the Bagley Wright Theatre. The Rep's full 2016-2017 season will be announced in April.

SIDEWAYS To Premiere at the St. James Theatre, May 26

A brand new production of Rex Pickett's critically acclaimed and much loved novel and play Sideways will open at the St James Theatre for its UK and European premiere, directed by David Grindley (Daytona, Journey's End, The American Plan). Sideways has a limited run from 26 May until 9 July, with press night on 31 May and the full cast and creative team will be announced in due course.

In its tenth anniversary season, THE CROSSING - the extraordinary chamber choir from Philadelphia, dedicated to new music and conducted by Donald Nally - comes to New York tonight, January 23, 2016 to perform the NY premiere of THE FIFTH CENTURY, a large-scale work for the rare combination of choir and saxophone quartet by the iconic avant-garde English composer GAVIN BRYARS. The event, which will also feature the great sax quartet PRISM and will have Bryars in the audience, takes place at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Chapel at Trinity Church, Wall Street.

Houston Grand Opera to Premiere THE ROOT OF THE WIND IS WATER, 5/13

Houston, January 13, 2016—Houston Grand Opera (HGO) will present the world premiere of The Root of the Wind Is Water, a chamber opera by composer David Hanlon and librettist Stephanie Fleischmann, directed by Matthew Ozawa, on May 13 at 7 p.m. at the Wortham Theater Center and on May 15 at 7 p.m. at The Grand 1894 Opera House in Galveston. Presented under the auspices of HGOco, the company's community collaboration and education initiative, The Root of the Wind Is Water explores the impact of hurricanes on the Texas Gulf Coast through the eyes of the residents who call the region home. The opera will be HGO's 61st world premiere.
