In TO DAD WITH LOVE, A TRIBUTE TO BUDDY EBSEN; Kiki Ebsen pays tribute to her father in the best way she knows how - singing and story-telling. Kiki graciously walked me through some of her vivid memories of growing up the child of a famous father, a most popular figure of 1960s television, known to weekly TV viewers as Jed Clampett of The Beverly Hillbillies.

Seattle Opera announced today that General Director Aidan Lang will leave the company to become General Director of Welsh National Opera. The third General Director of Seattle Opera, Lang departs at the close of the 2018/19 season following a five-year tenure. Under Lang's leadership, Seattle Opera has: increased its audiences, particularly, young people, created a new civic home for opera at Seattle Center, introduced new chamber opera productions in locations around the city, and made organizational strides toward racial equity.

When Tony Braithwaite set out to direct Biloxi Blues at Act II Playhouse, he had no idea what a tribute it would become. Legendary playwright, Neil Simon, passed away a week before opening. Something Braithwaite feared as Simon was upping in age, but with the days leading up to production and the Opening Night reception, he did this Bard justice. This is not shaping up to be a good year for Oscar Hammerstein II, American musical theatre's most important writer, who spent the first half of the 20th Century not only making significant strides to convert the genre from loosely assembled entertainments into respected and influential pieces of dramatic art, but was also a leading voice in promoting progressive values through his books and lyrics for such musicals as SHOW BOAT, SOUTH PACIFIC and THE KING AND I.

When Curly made his entrance on opening night at the St. James Theatre in 1943 and sang 'Oh, what a beautiful morning,' the whole audience took a huge sigh of relief. There in the midst of war was a breath of optimism and that beautiful music.' And, indeed, when the speaker, actor Stephen Mark Lukas makes the same entrance seventy-five years later on the stage of the Ogunquit Playhouse in the company's new production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic Oklahoma, the entire audience reacts in exactly same way. With a smile as expansive as the territory and a voice as luminous as the bright morning about which he sings, Lukas establishes immediate affection and rapport for the character of Curly, as does his co-star, the lovely, radiant Taylor Quick.

Following the announcement of kicking off Opening Night with the world premiere of Steven Tyler's documentary OUT ON A LIMB, the Nashville Film Festival continues its lineup for the ten-day festival (May 10-19, 2018) with the announcement of 48 additional feature films in Narrative, Documentary, New Directors and Graveyard Shift competitions. Jeremiah Alsop and Bradley Halverson have joined the cast of Pride Films and Plays' Chicago premiere of YANK! A WWII Love Story.  Halverson, whose recent credits include THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG with Brown Paper Box Company and HIGH FIDELITY with Refuge Theatre Project, is now playing Czechowski, the 'nice guy' of the platoon.  Alsop, a recent graduate of the Chicago College of Performing Arts, is playing India and is a member of the ensemble.

Pride Films and Plays' Chicago premiere of YANK! A WWII Love Story will be extended by four weeks due to audience demand. David Zak, Executive Director of Pride Films and Plays, announced the extension today. The hit off-Broadway musical, which opened to the press in Chicago on January 18, is the story of a midwestern boy who joins the Army during World War II, falls in love with another soldier in his squad and is later introduced to the gay underground of the Armed Services through a journalist for the Army magazine YANK. Zak directs the musical, with Robert Ollis providing musical direction and Jenna Schoppe choreography.

Tood, Weetsie, and Sybil are brides in rural Louisiana in 1943. Each married a Cliffert brother. The men are off to war and a local news story about these young wives keeping the home fires burning intrigues Henry Luce. He decides that they belong on the cover of Life magazine and assigns Kate Miller to the story. She has been covering the war in Europe and, though she views doing a 'women's piece' as a career set-back, she accepts because it will be her first cover story. Kate spends a week with the Cliffert women and her haughty urban attitude gives way to sympathy as she begins to understand them while coming face-to-face with her own powerlessness in a man's world.
