Modern audiences were given the opportunity to see the powerful messages of Wedekind's play - set in the late 19th century - juxtaposed with a manic, brilliant rock score by Duncan Sheik and equally impactful lyrics and a book by Steven Slater to create the recipient of 2007's Tony Award for Best Musical. Brought to life by The Argyle Theatre, Long Island fans of the show and those who missed it on Broadway have the chance to see this important work.

As it's been practically an annual tradition of mine over the last some six years, I always look forward to Ballet Hawaii's presentation of The Nutcracker, for it truly doesn't feel like Christmas without this heartwarming experience. From the familiar, charming score of renowned Tchaikovsky, to the antediluvian, spellbinding costumes, to the prestigious dancing, this particular ballet remains a formula for ultimate holiday and theatre-going success. The story follows as such: a young girl by the name of Clara attends a Christmas party, wherein she meets many denizens of her community but later receives a largesse in the form of a nutcracker. In her sleep that night, she dreams of a battle that ensues between a life-sized nutcracker and the Rat King, in which, after the battle, the prince leads Clara to watch a gamut of ballet dances. Overall, The Nutcracker is a generally enjoyable spectacle.

Directed by Darko Tresnjak, 'Anastasia' is not to be missed at Kennedy Center. A strong story with an equally strong cast to bring it to life, coupled with some great music by one of Broadway's best writing teams, makes it a sure bet.

One month after the close of its 86th season, Jacob's Pillow announces record-breaking ticket sales for its acclaimed summer dance festival. The organization reports over $2.5 million in ticket sales, an increase of 13% when compared with 2017; over 40,000 tickets were sold, an increase of 5%, when compared with last year. The season boasts 10,000 unique ticket buyers, an increase of 8% and the largest number since the organization began tracking this particular indicator in 2005.

Victory Gardens Theater's Chicago premiere of Paula Vogel's Tony nominated INDECENT weaves a beautiful narrative about the transcendence of art and human resilience. Director Gary Griffin's staging feels both grandiose and intimate at the same time; the play's action spans a time period from 1906-1950 and travels across continents, but the vignettes contained in Vogel's story are rife with genuine, powerful human emotion. INDECENT was inspired by the true story of the 1923 Broadway debut of Jewish playwright Sholem Asch's God of Vengeance, which had an illicit lesbian romance as one of its main plot points. Vogel's story charts God of Vengeance's journey from the moment Asch first presents the script to his wife through to its first reading and multiple staged productions.

I'm probably not the only person catching their first professional production of Oklahoma! with the Denver Center Theatre Company. While the first Rodgers and Hammerstein collaboration has been performed plenty since its Broadway premiere in 1943, the DCPA's production is unique-nearly the entire cast is comprised of African-American performers.

And, indeed, when the speaker, actor Stephen Mark Lukas makes the same entrance seventy-five years later on the stage of the Ogunquit Playhouse in the company's new production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic Oklahoma, the entire audience reacts in exactly same way. With a smile as expansive as the territory and a voice as luminous as the bright morning about which he sings, Lukas establishes immediate affection and rapport for the character of Curly, as does his co-star, the lovely, radiant Taylor Quick.

Mike Kenny's Random Selfies will have its premiere later this month at Polka Theatre's Techtopia Festival. Kenny is one of the leading writers in the UK who specialises in theatre for young people. His adaptation of The Railway Children for York Theatre Royal, seen at Waterloo and Kings Cross stations and the National Railway Museum, won the Olivier Award for Best Entertainment in 2011.

North Raleigh Arts and Creative Theatre (NRACT) is closing out their 2017-2018 season with the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening. NRACT Artistic Director Tim Locklear says although the show is controversial and for mature audiences only, due to the subject matter and brief nudity, Spring Awakening is as relevant as ever. Spring Awakening was also the subject of this season's NBC series Rise. 'For people who watched the TV show and didn't know about the musical, it breathes new life into the show,' says Locklear. 'But Spring Awakening is one of those shows that has a following, along with shows like Rent and Hair.'
