Novato Theater Company opens its new season in its brand-new venue with a smashing historical drama, James Goldman's The Lion in Winter, a play full of plots, counterplots and unforgettable characters. Lion is directed by award-winning director Kris Neely and features Craig Christiansen as King Henry II of England and Maxine Sattizahn as Eleanor of Aquitaine. Assistant Director is Michael Walraven. Last night was the premiere of FADE TO BLACK, an innovative 10 minute play festival promoting and supporting original works created by African-American artists. This showcase is the creative brainchild of Denise O'Neal of WMGE, LLC and Leighza Walker of LeighzaLand Productions, and it is a true first for the Houston theater community. Thankfully, these extraordinary women have already placed FADE TO BLACK on next year's calendar with the intentions of creating an annual event that centers around encouraging and producing new works written by African-American playwrights.

Berkeley Playhouse closes its fifth season with the Tony Award-winning musical THE WIZ. It's April 3, 1968 and the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., arrives at a Memphis motel after delivering his 'I've Been to the Mountaintop' speech. There, a mysterious maid bringing him a cup of room service coffee causes him to reflect on his life and destiny in Katori Hall's Olivier-winning play THE MOUNTAINTOP, running at TheaterWorks in Hartford.

The Public Theater (Artistic Director, Oskar Eustis; Executive Director, Patrick Willingham) will continue its popular Public Forum season this month with SONNETS FOR THE CITY on Friday, April 26 at 7 p.m. at Joe's Pub at The Public. Presented in association with New York Magazine, this one-night-only event will feature insights from notable writers, contemporary artists, and members of the community, including celebrated young novelist Tea Obreht, New York Magazine book critic Kathryn Schulz, Shakespeare scholar James Shapiro, and acclaimed actor Sam Waterston.

Nominated for two Tony Awards, the original Broadway production debuted in 1966 and was followed with the 1968 motion picture starring Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn, earning 7 Oscar nominations and giving Hepburn her 3rd Academy Award for Best Actress and Goldman his 1st for Best Adapted Screenplay.

The first preview performances of Philadelphia Theatre Company's production of The Mountaintop by Katori Hall will take place on Saturday, January 19 at 8:00 PM (Broad and Lombard Streets) and on Sunday, January 20 at 3:00 PM at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre. The remainder of the performance schedule remains unchanged through Sunday, February 17.

Stephen Hawking and his fellow physicists may not have yet figured out the formula for traveling through the time-space continuum, but apparently the Metropolitan Room discovered the secret. Last Friday night (October 26), I walked through the curtain into the main performance space and entered a time tunnel that took me from the 21st century into the 1960s and '70s. Two lovely, rising young stars of cabaret, Lauren Fox and Jennifer Sheehan (photo left), had obviously hurtled though that same time warp because in two separate shows on the same evening, they performed songs that had been written and recorded 15 to 25 years before they were born. In the process they transported this particular Baby Boomer joyously back to his youth and to the days of cultural upheaval, generation gaps, peace, love, war, and some of the best pop/rock music ever written.
