In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company has established a new dance institute through Zoom, The Bridge. The Institute's aim is to bring together dancers, choreographers and directors around the world to experience the master teachers of color whose practices are embedded in the community and are focused on advancing the art of dance that transform the personal, environmental and metaphysical spaces. Santa Monica (September 20, 2022) - The Realm Company founded by bicoastal dancer, choreographer, singer and actor Chasen Greenwood will be performing in the So Cal Ballet Scene this upcoming Saturday, September 24, at the Robert Moore Theater on Arlington Drive in COSTA MESA. Tickets are $25-35.

Playwrights Horizons will present the New York premiere of Bruce Norris’s Downstate, directed by Pam MacKinnon, October 28–December 11 (opening November 15). New York City Ballet announced today the promotion of Chun Wai Chan to Principal Dancer. Following a series of debuts throughout the Company’s 2021-22 Repertory Season, Chan will make his final debut this season in the role of Titania’s Cavalier in George Balanchine’s beloved full-length classic, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which closes out NYCB’s 2022 Spring Season with ten performances from May 21 to 29, 2022 at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. Chun Wai Chan joined New York City Ballet as a Soloist in August 2021.

Two years in the making, Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I makes its way to Anchorage! Set in the 1860's, The King and I follows the story of Anna Leonowens, a British school teacher who travels to Bangkok to teach the children of the King of Siam. This wonderfully vibrant production featured a suite of local Alaskan artists and dancers including choreographer and dancer Suparat Prasannet. I had the chance to speak to Suparat about her involvement with the production. Suparat has been Traditionally Thai dancing with Wat Dhamma Bhavana Buddhist Center since she was 3 years old. She states that every Sunday, her parents would take her to the Thai Temple in order for her to learn more about her culture through movement and reconnect with her roots through language.

Today (Thu 5 May) Assembly Festival, adds a further 90+ shows to its biggest and most dazzling line-up to date which includes returning Fringe favourites, theatrical debuts, international circus, comedy newcomers and the return of The Flick - Assembly’s late-night den off George Square. During August, self-proclaimed Duchess Diane Chorley will be hosting live entertainment at The Flick until 5am.

A cornucopia of dance talent will be on stage at the Gracie Theatre on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at 6 p.m. when members of Husson University's Dance Club and Dance Team share their talents as part of 'A Night to Remember.' The event is free and open to the public. Voluntary donations are welcome and help the club pay for costumes and shoes.

Ballet Kelowna presents the world premiere of the Company’s first-ever commissioned, full-length ballet, Macbeth, at the Kelowna Community Theatre on May 6 + 7, 2022 at 7:30pm. Originally scheduled to premiere in May 2020, and postponed due to the pandemic, the visceral production features choreography from Canadian choreographic star Alysa Pires, an original score by Dora Award-winning music director, composer, and lyricist Adam Sakiyama, and atmospheric multimedia visuals from Okanagan landscape artist Jane Everett. 

It all started in November of 2021 when one of my friends was visiting New York City for the first time. Being the theatre fan I am, I insisted that we saw a Broadway show together. He suggested a show called David Byrne’s American Utopia. “Sounds good to me,” I responded, “but quick question - Who’s David Byrne?”
