Tonight, Tuesday, Jan. 21, the University of Chicago and the Harris Theater for Music and Dance will present On Grace, a work-in-progress staged performance conceived and created by renowned actress/playwright Anna Deavere Smith, in collaboration with cellist Joshua Roman. The performance will be directed by Leonard Foglia. The event is the culmination of Smith's 2014 Presidential Arts Fellowship at UChicago and the first formal collaborative arts partnership between UChicago and Harris Theater.

Riccardo Muti, the preeminent conductor and the music director of the world-renowned Chicago Symphony Orchestra, returns to Chicago in late January for two weeks of CSO subscription programs. Concerts with Maestro Muti begin on Thursday, January 30 at 8 p.m. and continue on January 31 and February 1. This program—on which Muti and the CSO are joined by cellist Yo-Yo Ma and composer and cellist Giovanni Sollima—includes Schubert's Symphonies No. 3 and 4 along with the world premiere of a commissioned work for two cellos and orchestra by Giovanni Sollima. Maestro Muti's association with Sollima goes back over a decade, and includes previous performances together, as well as two prior world premieres: from Teatro alla Scala, which resulted in Sollima's Tempesta e Ritratti, premiered by Maestro Muti in 2001, and from Ravenna, for which Sollima composedPassiuni, premiered by Muti and the Cherubini Orchestra in 2008.

New Chicago Artists Join the Goodman's Artistic Team for 2013-14 Playwrights Unit

A new crop of local talent joins Goodman Theatre's artistic team for the 2013/2014 Season. The four Chicago-based writers named to the fourth season of the Playwrights Unit-a year-long residency program designed to support and develop new works-include Andrew Hinderaker, Gift Theatre ensemble member; Mickle Maher, cofounder of Theater Oobleck; Anne Garcia-Romero, a resident playwright at Chicago Dramatists; and Laura Schellhardt, who oversees undergraduate playwriting at Northwestern University. A partnership with Chicago Dramatists, the Playwrights Unit meets twice per month with members of the Goodman's artistic team to discuss their plays-in-progress and provide feedback for one another. The program includes readings of the playwrights' works-in-progress at Chicago Dramatists in early 2014, and culminates in summer 2014 with staged readings of their completed works at the Goodman. Playwrights Unit alumni include Greg Allen, Alice Austen, Ike Holter and Christopher Oscar Peña (2012/2013 Season); Philip Dawkins, Nambi E. Kelley, Elaine Romero and Martin Zimmerman (2011/2012 Season); and Seth Bockley, Lisa Dillman, Laura Jacqmin and Rohina Malik (2010/2011 Season).
