On November 7th more than 150 theatre artists and patrons attended the 2011 Castillo Theatre Gala Benefit at the All Stars Project's performing arts and development center, 543 West 42nd Street. The gala, which raised a record $77,000 for Castillo and its youth theatre training program, Youth Onstage!, paid tribute to four influential women of the theatre: Carmen de Lavallade, Gabrielle L. Kurlander, Judith Malina and Daphne Rubin-Vega.

The Castillo Theatre will hold its 2011 annual gala benefit entitled, WOMEN ONSTAGE, on Monday, November 7th at the All Stars Project, 543 West 42nd Street (between 10th & 11th Avenue) at 6:30 p.m. The gala will recognize and honor four inspirational women of the theatre. Carmen de Lavallade, Gabrielle L. Kurlander, Judith Malina, and Daphne Rubin-Vega have all lived lives of outstanding artistic achievement and have used their achievements to inspire others.

The Castillo Theatre (Dan Friedman, artistic director, Diane Stiles, managing director) is opening its 28th theatre season with the revival of its first show, Friedman's The Learning Play of Rabbi Levi-Yitzhok, Son of Sara, of Berditchev, directed by Moshe Yassur, a veteran of the Romanian, Israeli and French stages and the former director of the Jewish division of the New Federal Theatre.

Three-time Tony Award-winning scenic designer ROBIN WAGNER and esteemed costume designer LEWIS BROWN are among the 2011 TDF/Irene Sharaff Awards recipients. The awards will be presented at a ceremony on Friday, April 8 at 6:30pm at the Hudson Theatre (145 West 44th Street). Mr. Brown was selected to receive the 2011 TDF/Irene Sharaff Lifetime Achievement Award for costume design, and Tony Award-winning scenic designer Robin Wagner will receive the Robert L.B. Tobin Award for Sustained Excellence in Theatrical Design. Sadly, Mr. Brown passed away in January of 2011. His award will be accepted by his long-time colleague and friend, Albert Wolsky, who was the recipient of the 2010 TDF/Irene Sharaff Lifetime Achievement Award

The event begins at 7:00 PM with a concert at Carnegie Hall featuring a special lineup of concert artists - including Brooke Shields, Cheyenne Jackson, Christine Ebersole, Kelli O'Hara, Maurice Hines, Cartier Williams and special guest Angela Lansbury - under the baton of Music Director Steven Reineke. The New York Pops will also be joined on stage by the singers of The Camp Broadway Kids and the West Point Glee Club.
