By:

amador/stokes will present the World Premiere of DUELS by Nick Stokes, running August 18th to September 10th, 2016, playing Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays at 8:00pm with an Industry Performance on Sunday, August 28th at 8:00pm. Made up of a heady mix of Beckett, magic realism and tragic love story, DUELS will run at The Studio at 12th Ave Arts, 1620 12th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122. Tickets: $20/General, $10/students, seniors and TPS. Tickets available at Brown Paper Tickets.

Boy. Girl. Boy. Love. Betrayal. Death. In this earthy and absurdly surreal tale, Irene lives and toils in the same garden plot in which rivals John and Juan combat and kill each other again and again and again. DUELS bleeds vegetable juice, smashes tomatoes, smears blackberries, speaks Spanish, exploits immigrants and recedes from the suburban now to the rural then...back when the shooting began. DUELS is an impressionistic, intense, doomed and twisty love triangle presented by a team of dedicated local artists.

"The main thing that impresses me most about Nick's script is the use of language and repetition to explore themes of capitalism versus social status, jealousy versus acceptance, and love versus loyalty," says DUELS director José Amador. "His language is at turns allegorical and directly emotional, often within a given phrase. The play asks questions about how materialism tends to leave its devotees and their loved ones in its wake. It explores the unpredictable nature of memory and the fleeting way people recall cathartic and traumatic events...and how our emotional responses can to bring out the best and the worst in us."

DUELS is directed by José Amador (Annex Theatre's Black Like Us, Theatre Machine's The Lower Depths, Open Circle's Dark Ride), written by Nick Stokes (author of Affair, featured playwright at many a 14/48:The World's Quickest Theater Festival), and features the acting talents of Carter Rodriquez (Seattle Immersive Theatre's Romeo and Juliet, Thriving Artists' The Passion As Told by Antigona Perez, theater simple's Tilt Angel), Daniel Christensen (Live Girls' Blood Water Paint, Lauren Hlubny's This Is Not A Table For Three, Scotto Moore's Science Fiction webseries The Coffee Table) and Marianna de Fazio (Sound Theatre Company's Last Days of Judas Iscariot and Holiday of Errors, Seattle Immersive Theatre's Romeo and Juliet).

An excerpt of DUELS was presented in the 2013 Northwest New Works Festival at On the Boards.

DUELS production staff includes Silas James (Scenic Design), Amy Lazerte (Costume Design), Tess Malone (Lighting Design), Robin Macartney (Props Design), Michael James Adams (Music Design), Brendan Bigley (Graphic Design), Tom Wiseley (Stage Manager), and Laura Nelson (Dramaturg/Understudy).

amador/stokes is an Independent Producing Company created and maintained in order to produce the works created by Nick Stokes (playwright) and José Amador (director). As such, the company is dedicated to finding and presenting works that provoke and intrigue with their intricate plotting, unusual structures and use of language.
