Review: THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA at Paramount Theatre
The Masked Phenomenon makes its way to Seattle
It’s almost unbelievable for me to admit that this was my first time seeing The Phantom of the Opera. Of course, I knew the iconic songs and had seen countless clips over the years, but experiencing the production live on stage for the first time was entirely different, haunting, and spine-chilling in the best way possible. From the chandelier drop to the monumental set pieces, the show truly lives up to its legendary reputation. The 2026 tour, directed by Harold Prince, serves as a revitalized version of the original production, featuring Maria Björnson’s iconic designs, musical staging, and choreography by Gillian Lynne. It is absolutely ravishing, and Seattle audiences are lining up hours early to witness the spectacle for themselves.
Set in the Paris Opera House, The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a disfigured, masked musical genius who secretly haunts the theater and becomes obsessively devoted to the up-and-coming soprano Christine Daaé. The production sweeps audiences into a world of grand musical numbers, unrequited love, obsession, and theatricality on a scale few productions can rival. These elements are a huge part of why the musical has remained beloved for decades.
Easily the most unforgettable aspect of the production is its technical brilliance. I was completely awestruck from the moment I entered the theater. The sheer scale and craftsmanship of the sets and effects elevate the show to another level entirely. This production’s rendition of “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again” was especially memorable, with stunning scenic elements framing Christine’s emotional performance in a way that felt almost cinematic. Björnson’s vision for this touring production remains revolutionary and timeless.

The touring cast brings together an ensemble of remarkably talented performers who work together with effortless fluidity. Ensemble numbers such as “Masquerade” nearly steal the show altogether. The sheer force and precision behind the performances make every musical moment feel palpable throughout the audience. The full cast list can be found here.
Naturally, Jordan Lee Gilbert delivers a show-stopping performance as Christine Daaé. Her portrayal is vibrant, emotionally layered, and vocally stunning. Gilbert’s incredibly smooth and precise voice is matched by equally compelling acting, making Christine’s emotional journey feel deeply authentic from beginning to end. Every struggle, realization, and moment of vulnerability comes through with striking clarity.
Isaiah Bailey is equally mesmerizing as the Phantom. His performance captures both the character’s menace and profound vulnerability, creating a Phantom who feels deeply human beneath the mask. His relationship with Christine is layered with complexity, and his commanding vocals make every appearance unforgettable.
The Phantom of the Opera is a production that carries enormous expectations from longtime fans. Audiences arrive dressed to the nines, many wearing the iconic mask themselves. Thankfully, this touring production rises to the occasion. It is grand, emotional, and visually spectacular. This is a theatrical experience you absolutely will not want to miss.
