I wonder what Arrigo Boito might have done with Shakespeare’s “A Comedy of Errors” or “Twelfth Night.” Because, while he’s best known for his libretto for the Bard’s “Othello,” his work on FALSTAFF—based on “The Merry Wives of Windsor” and “Henry IV”—is just as marvelous. The trouble, of course, is that FALSTAFF is a comedy. In the new production of the work, which opened at Rome’s Opera House last week, it didn’t help that director Tatjana Gürbaca didn’t seem to have anything particular in mind in her take on it.

On Friday, October 2nd, I had the pleasure of my first experience at Crystal Theatre in Norwalk, CT, seeing a phenomenal original musical called FRECKLE! This musical comedy takes some unique and unconventional stylistic choices, all of which work perfectly! With book, music, and lyrics written by Michael Burgess, this show is based on a true story about Michael Burgess and stars Michael Burgess as Michael Burgess. Michael Burgess is also the musical director, costume designer, and stage designer. The striking choreography is by Katrina Perkins and Jennifer Ellyson. The impressive set with various moving parts is constructed by Dom Lettera. The stellar cast all radiate positive energy, showing that they are having a lot of fun up on stage, as the audience enjoys watching them perform!

It is painstakingly faithful to the book, save for some extra beats that make Jane a more modern-minded woman. Rebecca Bernstein’s performance is wonderful and a career-high for her so far. Luke Hales is the right Rochester, and Todd Thigpen is a delicious Mason.
