ARSENIC AND OLD LACE delivers the laughs in grand style at Center Rep. Director Matt M. Morrow puts a fresh spin on an old classic and breathes new life into it. In a show that is full of great one liners and subtle bits, Center Rep has added layers of physical comedy and technical accents. What is normally a quiet, funny play is served up as a comedy extravaganza.

by Rachel Weinberg — Sep 11, 2022

What did our critic think of ARSENIC AND OLD LACE at Court Theatre? Joseph Kesselring's 1941 play ARSENIC AND OLD LACE combines farce, explicitly dark comedy, and a little murder. Director Ron OJ Parson's decision to envision the central Brewster family as a wealthy Black American family gives the play a modern twist.

The play is a farcical dark comedy revolving around the Brewster family, descended from the Mayflower settlers but now composed of maniacs, most of them homicidal. The hero, Mortimer Brewster, is a drama critic who must deal with his crazy, murderous family and local police in Brooklyn, New York, as he debates whether to go through with his recent promise to marry the woman he loves, Elaine Harper, who lives next door and is the daughter of the local minister. Performances are March 18-20 and 25-27, 2022, and will be held at the Wigwam Theater (10190 Blacklick-Eastern Road Northwest, Pickerington, OH 43147). Mortimer is the drama critic who hates theater, and Elaine is the girl he wants to marry. by Jerri Shafer — Jun 14, 2021

Mortimer Brewster is living a happy life! He has a steady job at a prominent New York newspaper, he’s just become engaged, and he gets to visit his sweet spinster aunts to announce the engagement. Mortimer always knew that his family had a bit of a mad gene -- his brother believes himself to be Teddy Roosevelt and his great-grandfather used to scalp Indians for pleasure -- but his world is turned upside down when he realizes that his dear aunts have been poisoning lonely old men for years! When Mortimer’s maniacal brother, Jonathan. (who strangely now resembles Boris Karloff) returns on the night that the aunts were planning to bury the newest victim, Mortimer must rally to help his aunts and protect his fiancé -- all while trying to keep his own sanity as well. An uproarious farce on plays involving murder, Arsenic and Old Lace has become a favorite amongst regional theatres throughout America. Performances are Streaming Live & in-person Live from June 11th thru 13th and Streaming on Demand June 18th thru 20th at the Columbus Dance Theatre, 592 E. Main St., Columbus, OH 43215. BWW Review: ARSENIC & OLD LACE Delivers Killer Performance at JPAS

by Tara Bennett — Mar 2, 2021

At first glance, the living room in the Brewster home is quaint and unassuming. But when young Mortimer Brewster discovers that his aunts Abby and Martha are serving their boarding guests something a little stronger than tea, things become a bit complicated in ARSENIC & OLD LACE by Joseph Kesselring. This 1939 murder-filled classic is brought to vibrant life at the Jefferson Performing Arts Center this month. If you’re a fan of dark humor and screwball comedy, then you’ll enjoy this enthusiastic production that nothing drives you crazy quite like family.
