Based on the real life romance between Mack Sennett (the great director of the 'Silent Movie' era) and Mabel Normand (queen of the 'Silent Movies'). Sennett, whose passion was 'making people laugh', churned out 'one - reelers' at a prolific rate which were lapped up by an adoring public. It's 1938 and Mack revisits his old movie studio. In flashback to 1910 we see his first encounter with Mabel and follow the ups and downs of their stormy relationship. The story unfolds through the wonderful comedy characters of that era - Charlie Chaplin, Fatty Arbuckle, The Keystone Kops and yes! the obligatory custard pie fight. Jerry Herman's winning score received 8 Tony Award nominations and includes the toe tapping "Tap Your Troubles Away"
