EDINBURGH 2026: Review: JOHN-LUKE ROBERTS: WHAT I TALK ABOUT WHEN I RUN ABOUT TALKING, Monkey Barrel 4

John-Luke Roberts returns to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with What I Talk About When I Run About Talking, his first new hour in four years. He delivers an intellectually playful and deeply personal show, blending absurdism with sharp observation and moments of genuine poignancy into an inventive hour.

From the outset, Roberts establishes an immediate rapport with the audience by reassuring them that he will do all the talking, allowing everyone else to simply relax. His opening sets the tone for a performance filled with confidence, warmth and an abundance of eccentric ideas.

His comedy frequently veers into delightfully unexpected territory. He proudly defends unpopular opinions, while effortlessly weaving together stories which range from the ridiculous to the surprisingly heartfelt. He jokes about his non-French inspired stage name, delights in the untrue rules of Equity and reveals his affection for bath bombs, healthy steps into therapy and his favourite psychological forefathers, all delivered with an endearing sense of self awareness.

Although much of the material embraces silliness, there is a thoughtful emotional core running beneath the surface. Following a serious health scare, Roberts reflects upon mortality with honesty, although never allowing the show to become overly sombre. Instead, he balances moments of vulnerability with absurd humour, demonstrating remarkable skill in transforming health anxiety into comedy. The result is a performance which feels authentic without becoming self indulgent.

Several routines stand out as particular highlights. His exploration of slogans and trademarks is brilliantly inventive, while his niche observations are all entirely hilarious. Equally memorable are his musings on the merits of hand dryers, proving that even the most ordinary subjects can become fertile ground for excellent comedy.

The show’s greatest strength lies in its storytelling. Roberts’ affectionate reflections on his relationship with his mother, particularly her wonderfully elaborate and hilariously movable annual nativity scene, providing genuinely charming moments which allow the audience to glimpse the man behind the absurdity. These sections are balanced perfectly against discussions of his bizarre doom scroll algorithm and his enthusiasm for agency, choice, magic and clowning, all of which contribute to the show’s delightfully unpredictable energy.

Roberts possesses a distinctive comic voice which comfortably straddles mainstream stand up and moments of poetry. His willingness to embrace the surreal never feels inaccessible, instead inviting audiences to enjoy comedy which constantly surprises while remaining grounded in recognisable human experiences.

What I Talk About When I Run About Talking is an intelligent, imaginative and consistently funny performance which successfully combines absurdist invention with emotional honesty. By turning mortality, medical procedures and existential uncertainty into material which feels both personal and universally recognisable, Roberts delivers a skilful, absorbing and uplifting show.
