EDINBURGH 2026: Review: ALICE FRASER: OH MAN!, Monkey Barrel at O'Neills (The Tron)

Alice Fraser brings an intellectually rich and entertaining hour of stand up to the Edinburgh Fringe with a show which cleverly blends equality, philosophy, social commentary and sharp observational comedy. Packed with wit, irony and thoughtful storytelling, this is an ambitious performance which challenges its audience to call out gender inequality, while delivering plenty of laughs.

Fraser opens by introducing her Roomba which is a male identifying robot vacuum cleaner. Fraser is attempting to train the Roomba to become an ally, in response to the rise of toxic masculinity and to counter repellent manosphere podcasts. It is an inspired yet absurb premise, which immediately establishes the evening’s playful tone, while providing the framework for everything which follows.

Throughout the performance, Fraser expertly dissects the anatomy of a comedy set, treating it as a mathematical formula. The audience is guided through carefully structured layers, complete with several deliberately intrusive “advert” breaks which become a running joke in their own right. The callbacks are exceptionally well placed and reward those paying close attention.

The material confidently moves between Greek philosophy, ethical dilemmas, artificial intelligence, patriotism and misogyny without ever feeling inaccessible. A highlight recounts an exchange with a neighbour, revealing how patriotism and misogyny continue to negatively affect society. Fraser uses these moments not simply to provoke thought, but to underpin the show’s central question of how society can truly measure what makes a good man. As the evening progresses, she humorously continues feeding this information into her increasingly sentient Roomba in the hope that it will eventually reach a sensible conclusion.

Some of the strongest laughs come when Fraser effortlessly turns familiar gender expectations on their head. Delivered with a wonderfully matter of fact style, her observations expose uncomfortable social norms. A particularly clever routine argues that older men should not feel pressured into unrealistic body ideals, neatly reversing conversations which more commonly focus on women. Fraser further discusses The 1% Club, The Bodyguard problem, audience contributions about good men, philosophy, safety, metrics and even penis jokes are woven together with remarkable wit and confidence.

Fraser’s dynamic storytelling and sharp delivery ventures into unexpected territory. While a handful of ideas occasionally become so densely layered that they risk overshadowing the comedy, the intelligence behind the writing is never in doubt.

This is stand up for audiences who enjoy ethical comedy. Clever, inventive and packed with comedic activism, Alice Fraser demonstrates why society needs to be jolted out of accepting gender norms and how to be the antidote to the manosphere, by upholding equality, modelling kindness and uplifting gender security.
