Review: LADY DISDAIN at Asolo Repertory Theatre

"LADY DISDAIN", the Rolling World Premiere, by Lauren Gunderson is a romantic comedy play that cleverly infuses a modern and feminist twist into Shakespeare's classic "Much Ado About Nothing." The setting is a vibrant audio book recording studio, where the delightful drama unfolds between the feuding narrators Bea and Ben. What starts as a clash of egos slowly evolves into a heartwarming enemies-to-lovers story full of witty banter.

Veronika Duerr and Casey Murphy sure had a mouthful of words to share as Beatrice and Ben, engaging in witty banter that could make even the most verbose Shakespearean character blush. And when the ladies of the play, including the playful Sophia Alawi as Hannah and Brett Ashley Robinson as Alice, joined the wordy fray, the verbal jousting escalated to a delightful cacophony of witticisms.

But it was Murphy and Duerr's masterful transition into their roles as Audio-readers and then back to their “real voices”, that seamlessly drew the audience into the story from the get-go. Their portrayal of characters disillusioned by romance was both poignant and hilarious, a refreshing take on the tired trope of love in the modern age. Tired of being constantly bombarded with tales of love and longing, these anti-romantic protagonists have become the ultimate cynics, serving up sarcasm and skepticism with a side of charm.
